Some woodworkers have the skills to produce beautiful, unique pieces, and many craft shows, fairs and competitions focus on displaying this unique talent. South Carolina hosts a number of such events each year, providing a chance to learn about the skills involved in producing these unique products, and to see some impressive woodworking exhibits.
South Carolina Wood Carving Show
The South Carolina Wood Carving Show (orangeburgcountyfair.org) takes place each autumn as part of the Orangeburg County Fair. Presented by the Orangeburg Wood Carving Club and the Orangeburg Fine Arts Center, the wood carving show is a competition at which the best entries receive awards. Any woodworker can enter an exhibit in novice, intermediate or open divisions. The carvings must remain on display at all times during the week, with visitors to the fair welcome to attend the show and view the carvings.
Piedmont Wood Carvers Show
The Piedmont Wood Carvers Club (peidmontwoodcarvers.com) organizes an annual competition and show that takes place in November each year. The event has a history dating back more than 20 years, and usually takes place at the Ray Hopkins Senior Center in the city of Mauldin. The competition has a theme each year, with the creator of the best carving depicting this theme receiving a cash prize. Other highlights of the three-day show include wood carving demonstrations, wood whittling competitions and vendors selling wood carving supplies.
Woodcraft of Greenville
The Woodcraft store (woodcraft.com) in Greenville has a range of supplies available for woodworkers. The store also arranges events during the year for the benefit of the public. Their Fall Woodworking Show takes place over a two-day period in October, and has vendor demonstrations of woodworking equipment, wood-craft demonstrations and a chance to meet woodworking experts. The store also organize teaching shows during the year, with renowned experts demonstrating wood crafting skills.
Wooden Boat Show
The Wooden Boat Show (woodenboatshow.com) has been held on the waterfront and venues in the historic downtown area of Georgetown, South Carolina, for more than two decades. The show features smaller canoes and kayaks and larger powerboats and sailboats. A judging panel presents awards to the best entries. A boat-building competition offers visitors a chance to watch two-man teams put their woodworking skills to use in constructing a 12-foot rowing skiff on the day of the event.
Winyah Bay Heritage Festival
The Winyah Bay Heritage Festival (winyahbayfestival.com) usually takes place in March in venues around Georgetown. The festival celebrates the rural hunting and fishing lifestyle of the Winyah Bay area, with many of the exhibitors displaying their woodworking skills. Exhibits can include wood boat paddles, duck decoys, and carved birds and animals. Visitors have the opportunity to view the displays and meet their creators.
