Skateboarding is an enjoyable hobby or leisure activity for some, and a seriously competitive sport for others. Whichever category you fall under, trying skateboarding tricks is likely part of the puzzle. Tricks like board slides and grinds benefit from skateboard wax on your board or the surface the trick is being performed on. Wax helps reduce friction, which makes the trick less challenging and sometimes safer. Applying wax takes only a few moments.

Items you will need

  • Skateboard or other wax
Step 1

Hold the bar or cake of wax in your hand and rub it lightly over the wear marks on your deck, trucks and tail.

Step 2

Rub the wax in further with your fingers after you've made the initial application.

Step 3

Hold the wax in one hand and rub it over the surface you intend to slide or grind on.

Step 4

Rub the wax over curbs or rails to provide a smooth surface for performing your tricks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Specific types of skateboard wax are available from your local supply shop, or you can use a regular cake or bar of wax from a hardware or department store. Leave the wax in solid form to apply to your board and surfaces.
  • Spread an even coat of wax over the surface the trick will be performed on to ensure a safe slide, without any hesitations.
  • Apply the wax sparingly because it is easier to add more than to remove it if the surface or your board becomes too slippery. Use more wax for rough surfaces like curbs.
