Bickford Slides

The Bickford Slides are fed by Bickford Brook in the town of Stow. It's a moderate climb of 50 minutes to the upper slide. This series of falls is nestled in a deep ravine between Blueberry Mountain and Sugarloaf Mountain. The upper slide features a heavily shaded pool that is suitable for swimming in the summer months. The best time to visit the slides is from May to October, and the trails are accessed at White Mountain National Forest.

The Cataracts

The Cataracts in Andover West Surplus, Maine, offer several swimming holes and opportunities for hours of exploration. The water levels change through the seasons -- the summer months are good for exploring the caves behind the falls. The trails here are moderately easy to climb. It takes about 20 minutes to climb 150 feet to the top.

Coos Canyon

Coos Canyon is in a beautiful roadside park in Byron. The trail offers easy access for all ages, and people often dive off the canyon walls to the river below. There are also spots for picnicking and a shallow wading pool. The falls here are fed by Swift River -- the most popular place in Maine to pan for gold. The Ole Prospector Mineral & Gift Shoppe near the canyon rents supplies for a reasonable fee and offers free demonstrations on how to pan for gold.

Frenchman's Hole

Frenchman's Hole is a popular attraction in Riley Township, Maine. It's accessed by an easy trail of less than a tenth of a mile. The falls are fed by Bull Branch River, and there is a large pool under the waterfall. Cliff jumping is possible, but should be done with an abundance of caution. There are picnic tables available, along with several small waterfalls and swimming holes that are less crowded.
