In Virginia, the word resort designates both high-end self-contained timeshare properties and rustic hideaways in the woods where the amenities include a fishing hole and a horseback ride. Virginia resort hotels cater to skiers and hikers in the Blue Ridge Mountains, beachgoers on the Atlantic Ocean and travelers in search of solitude in between.
Bernard’s Landing, on Smith Mountain Lake southeast of Roanoke, rents fully equipped condominiums, patio homes and townhouses. The resort has a swimming pool and a private sand beach, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, and a horseshoe pit. Boat and personal watercraft owners must purchase a guest decal at a nominal fee, and ski boats, pontoons and canoes are available for rent. A nearby stable provides two-hour long horseback tours of the lake. The Landing Restaurant, a local favorite, serves American cuisine with Andean Nuevo influences.
Massanutten is a four seasons resort centered on Massanutten Peak, a ski area with tubing, snowboarding and ski trails as well as a terrain park and lodge. Encounters, the lounge at the lodge presents live entertainment every night during ski season. The resort’s spa offers massage and salon services, classes in reflexology and nail care and hosts spa parties. Accommodations include condos located on the mountain and standard hotel rooms. Massanutten’s water park, open year-round, has both indoor and outdoor facilities.
Montebello Fishing and Camping Resort
Montebello Fishing and Camping Resort offers a budget-friendly option for guests who are mainly interested in getting away to enjoy the outdoors. The resort, located in the mountains near the Blue Ridge Parkway, offers seasonal campsites and fully equipped cabins with lake and mountain views. A license isn’t required to fish in any of the stocked trout ponds, but you must keep (and pay for) what you catch. The resort offers buggy rides, trail rides and riding lessons for equestrians.
The Boardwalk Resort Hotel and Villas
Suites at the Boardwalk Resort Hotel, located on the waterfront in Virginia Beach, have floor to ceiling windows and doors leading to balconies with boardwalk and ocean views. Larger suites feature multiple bathrooms and full kitchens. The ocean view patio at the Rockfish Bar and Grill is popular for gourmet Sunday brunches and its Bloody Mary bar during the summer season. The restaurant is closed during the off-season. Because the resort is a timeshare, early check out is required so the staff has time to clean suites for visiting owners.
