Paintball simulates combat fighting, using propelled paint as ammunition. To ensure the safety of its players, paintball regulation requires protective gear for the upper torso. Nothing gives more protection for the head and neck region than a proper set of paintball goggles, also known as a mask. Because paintballs are known to travel upwards of 300 feet per second, adequate face protection is necessary to prevent injuries.

Standard Mask

Standard paintball masks provide basic protection for the eyes, mouth, ears and nose. Paintball goggles are manufactured with the proper safety criteria and standards to prevent injury. Lenses are constructed from polycarbonate, which provides impact resistance. Anti-scratch coatings protect the lenses from scratches and cracks. Various customizations such as visors, throat protection and fabric covers are also available.

Profile Masks

Profile masks cover only the player's face, which means less total weight of the mask. These goggles provide good face and ear protection but may leave the back of the head vulnerable. Head straps and buckles secure the mask for a comfortable fit. Profile masks allow for better ventilation and mobility because of its light overall weight; however, players are more prone to injuries.

Full Face Masks

On the other hand, full face masks offer complete protection for the entire head, covering the face, sides and back of the head. A full face mask includes vented components in front of the mouth and nostrils. Because of the extra protection, full face masks are heavier than profile masks and reduce the player's mobility. Usually, these masks are preferred during long hours of playing.

Thermal Lens Mask

Unlike standard paintball masks with single-layered lenses, thermal lenses prevent fogging. An increase in body temperature and active breathing during play often generates fog and reduces visibility within the mask. Thermal lenses prevent this by incorporating an air chamber sandwiched in between two layers of lenses. This construction reduces condensation on the interior lens.
