Leicester is a city located in the United Kingdom, in the East Midlands region of England. Dating back to Roman times, Leicester may not be the most attractive city in the country, but there are plenty of things for you and your family to do, especially if you are interested in Asian cultures.
If your kids want to be astronauts when they grow up, take them to The National Space Centre (spacecentre.co.uk). Designed to educate about the science of space, the centre features interactive exhibits and displays about space travel, as well as information on current missions occurring above the Earth. After visiting the exhibits, watch a film in the domed Space Theatre, which takes you into the deep reaches of space.
Leicester is teeming with Asian culture, a good way to educate your kids about different ways of life. Visit the city's Golden Mile, a district of Leicester that is dominated by people of Asian heritage. Set about a mile north Leicester's center, the Golden Mile offers shops and markets that specialize in Asian goods, clothes and jewelry. It is also home to numerous Indian and vegetarian restaurants where you and your kids can sample curries and other staples. You can also visit the Jain Centre (jaincentre.com), the only Jain temple in Europe. This marble temple is home to an Indian religion that focuses primarily on pacifism, a good lesson for your children.
Since Leicester has been around since 50 AD, it is home to numerous pieces of British history. The Jewry Wall Museum (leicestermuseums.ac.uk) features excavated remains of the city's Roman past including baths, mosaics and frescoes. It is also home to "The Making of Leicester," an interactive exhibit that tells the story of the city. For more modern history, visit the Newarke Houses Museum, a recreation of 16th century Leicester. Your kids can learn about how ordinary people lived in the city during the 1500s and visit recreations of shops from that period.
If your children love animals, take them to the Twycross Zoo (twycrosszoo.org), located about 20 miles outside Leicester. Home to more than 1,000 animals, the zoo has been in existence since the 1960s. It is home to two immersion exhibits: The South American Tropical House is a walk-through rain forest featuring birds and marmosets while the Borneo Longhouse takes you past birds and animals that call Indonesia home.
