Alameda, California sits in the San Francisco Bay area, just south of Oakland. Surrounded by water, the city offers a variety of water and ocean-related museums and activities for children and families. Alameda also serves as the home to a wide variety of outdoor entertainment options and traditional children's activities to help entertain kids throughout the year.
Museums help children learn while having fun. The U.S.S. Hornet Museum (uss-hornet.org) offers children the chance to tour an aircraft carrier. Children over 38 inches tall may also choose to ride the museum's flight simulator. The Alameda Naval Air Museum (alamedanavalairmuseum.org) teaches children about naval aviation and flight through exhibits filled with artifacts and model planes. For a different museum experience, the Pacific Pinball Museum (pacificpinball.org) showcases a unique collection of vintage pinball machines, including some games that children may play during a visit.
The parks in Alameda encourage children to burn off energy outdoors and enjoy the mild temperatures in the region. Franklin Park on San Antonio Avenue offers a playground, tennis courts and a swimming pool. Parents will enjoy taking children to play for an hour or have an afternoon picnic at the park. Ida Kruis Memorial Park on Otis Drive has two separate playgrounds for younger and older children, with plenty of grassy space for kids to run around. The park also has softball fields and barbecue grills.
Traditional Kids' Activities
Color Me Mine (alameda.colormemine.com) offers "paint your own pottery" for children and adults. Children pick their own pieces of pottery from a variety of styles and use the studio's unique collection of tools to paint them. The Alameda Free Library (cityofalamedaca.gov) offers free book checkout, art exhibits and special events for kids.
Festivals and Events
Held annually on Mother's Day weekend, the Park Street Spring Festival (shopparkstreet.com) offers art, food and live music while visitors browse the shops on Park Street. Face-painting, pony rides and other activities help entertain children. The Alameda Children's Musical Theatre (acmtkids.org) offers a selection of plays and musicals throughout the year. Enjoy a performance with your children, or encourage your own talented youngsters to audition for the theater's performances.
