Stephen Sommers directed "The Mummy Returns," a sequel to the 1999 film "The Mummy." "The Mummy Returns" stars Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell, a former member of the French Foreign Legion, and Rachel Weisz as Evelyn O'Connell, a librarian turned archeologist. The couple, accompanied by their young son, embark on an action-packed adventure to defeat the High Priest Imhotep.

Plot Summary

In this sequel, Rick and his wife Evie must once again fight the resurrected Imhotep, along with an even more powerful force, the Scorpion King. In ancient Egypt, the Scorpion King led an army to conquer the world, but facing annihilation, he agreed to give Anubis, god of the underworld, his soul in exchange for success. When Rick and Evie's son Alex puts on the Bracelet of Anubis, which Imhotep needs to control the Scorpion King's resurrected army, the stakes are raised. After Imhotep kidnaps Alex, Rick must race against time to save his son and the world.

The Conclusion

It literally becomes a race against time at the end of the movie when Rick must help Alex reach the Scorpion King's pyramid before sunrise, otherwise the Bracelet of Anubis will kill Alex. Luckily, they make it in time and the bracelet finally releases Alex. At the pyramid, Anck Su Namun kills Evie, but Alex resurrects her with the Book of the Dead. Rick and Imhotep fight but are interrupted by the Scorpion King. With the help of his brother-in-law Johnathan, Rick kills the Scorpion King and Imhotep dies in the crumbling pyramid.

"The Mummy Returns" received mixed reviews from top critics. Roger Ebert gave the film only two out of four stars, "Entertainment Weekly" gave it a C+ grade, and "TV Guide" criticized the "unconvincing computer-generated effects." On the other hand, "Variety" said the movie is "considerably more elaborate and spectacular in its special effects" than the previous movie, and the "New York Daily News" called it "breathlessly action-packed." Despite the reviews, "The Mummy Returns" ranked No. 1 the weekend it opened and grossed $202 million nationally in 2001.

Other Movies

"The Mummy Returns" led to the spin-off movie, "The Scorpion King" in 2002, which was also directed by Stephen Sommers. The film is set 5,000 years before "The Mummy Returns," when the "Scorpion King" was an assassin named Mathayus sent to stop the evil King Memnon and his sorceress. In 2008, Brendan Fraser returned to play Rick O'Connell in "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor." The film also stars Jet Li as the evil Emperor Han.
