A Summary of "Armageddon" by Tim LaHaye

by Toby Welch

"Armageddon: The Cosmic Battle of the Ages" by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye is the eleventh book in the "New York Times" best-selling Left Behind series. The series deals with spiritual issues and has people contemplating the future and where they belong in it. "Armageddon" hit bookshelves on April 8, 2003, and, like its predecessors, hit the bestseller list immediately. The book was published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. and it runs 432 pages.

First Half of "Armageddon"

"Armageddon" starts at the beginning of the last year of the Tribulation. The Tribulation Force and other worldwide armies are planning a massive battle. While the Tribulation Force awaits the coming of Christ, Chloe sets off on her own investigation and gets abducted. Rayford, Abdullah and Naomi head to New Babylon to rescue Chang Wong. Rayford discovers an underground cell of believers hiding out in New Babylon and crashes a meeting with Antichrist Nicolae Carpathia. The Tribulation Force tries to track down Chloe but can't save her before her execution. Mourning for Chloe is intense.

Second Half of "Armageddon"

Six months pass and Ming Toy and Ree Woo get married. Meanwhile, the Tribulation Force discovers that Nicolae Carpathia is the Antichrist. As Buck and Tsion head for Jerusalem, Carpathia orders an attack on Jerusalem. God causes the Euphrates River to dry up, fulfilling the sixth Bowl Judgment. Tsion travels to Jerusalem with Buck to fight with the Jews. Mac heads to New Babylon with Lionel and saves the remaining believers before they are exterminated. Buck and Rayford are injured and Tsion is killed. The battle starts on the day of the Lord's coming.

End of "Armadgeddon"

The last 40 or 50 pages of "Armageddon" are spent setting up for the next book in the series, "Glorious Appearing: The End of Days (Left Behind #12)." At the end is when we finally see some wartime action in Jerusalem and the Valley of Megiddo. The book draws to a close as Christ's followers look to the heavens for a sign of Christ. In an obvious foreshadowing, we can assume the next book will herald Jesus Christ's glorious return to earth. Additionally, the Tribulation Force continue to fight the forces of evil and a major character is killed although we won't find out who until the next book.
