Most bicycles are made with silver, black, or white handlebars. If you want to add a splash of color to your bike handlebars, you don't need to pay professionals to do a custom paint job. You can save money and have a blast by purchasing your own spray paint and painting the handlebars yourself.
Items you will need
- One can of water resistant spray paint
- One can of spray paint primer
- One can of clear coat spray paint
- Painting tarp
- Masking tape
- Steel wool
- Sand paper
Cover the entire bicycle other than the handlebars with the painting tarp. This will prevent the spray paint from getting on the frame of the bicycle.
Secure the painting tarp with masking tape, making sure that no portion of the bicycle is exposed other than the handlebars.
Set the bicycle on a flat surface such as a driveway or walkway and use the kickstand to steady it. To prevent spray paint from getting on the ground, you may want to cover the painting area with another painting tarp.
Use the steel wool to scrub the handlebars in order to remove any dirt or streaks that will prevent the spray paint from going on smoothly.
Use the sandpaper to sand the handlebars thoroughly, making sure they are smooth and ready to be painted.
Spray a light coat of spray paint primer on the handlebars. Hold the can approximately six inches from the handlebars as you spray the primer in a smooth motion.
Allow the spray primer to dry for one hour and then re-spray the primer in the same manner as before.
Allow the second coat of primer to dry for one hour.
Apply a thin coat of the spray paint to the handlebars, again holding the can about six inches from the bars. Make sure to cover every part of the handlebars. Allow the paint to dry for about 30 minutes.
Repeat this process two more times, allowing each coat to dry for 30 minutes before applying the next.
Spray the clear spray paint coat on the handlebars just as you did the primer and the spray paint. Allow this to dry for one hour.
Spray two more coats of clear coating onto the handlebars, allowing it to dry for one hour in between each coating.
Remove the painting tarp from your bicycle and take it for a spin.
Tips & Warnings
- Spray paint can be harmful if it is inhaled or comes into contact with your eyes. Always wear a protective mouth and nose cover and goggles.
