With everything from college contests to professional games, Pittsburgh is a city for true sports lovers. Whether your little one is a skater, swimmer, basketball enthusiast or just enjoys all sports, there are a variety of athletic-themed birthday locations in this western Pennsylvania city and its surrounding areas.
Science of Sports
If your birthday boy or girl delights in discovering the science behind sports, then an exploration-filled party at the Carnegie Science Center (carnegiesciencecenter.org) may be just the ticket. The Science Center's Highmark SportsWorks provides guests with more than 30 exhibits that feature the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle, the physics of sports and athletic-themed challenges. Kids can test their track time against an Olympic medalist, check out the speed of their fastball with the radar gun, climb a rock wall or pedal a unicycle on a high wire. Party packages allow you to invite up to 20 guests, and include a party room, Center/SportsWorks admission and refreshments.
Ice Skating
Create a winter wonderland celebration that features ice skating. Ice arenas and rinks with either outdoor or indoor settings host parties. The Pittsburgh Park's Schenley Skating Rink (city.pittsburgh.pa.us) provides winter birthday festivities that include the use of a private party room. Additionally, the nearby North and South Parks (alleghenycounty.us/parks/fees/skate.aspx) provide group rentals for parties and occasions. If you are looking for an indoor option that works well with a spring through fall birthday, Pittsburgh and its surrounding areas have many different rink choices. The suburban South Hills setting is home to Blade Runners Ice Complex (bladerunnersice.com), which offers skating package parties as well as ice bumper cars for the more adventurous. The Ice Castle Arena (icecastlearena.com) holds weekend birthday parties.
Swimming
From Olympic hopefuls to the causal swimmer, a water-themed birthday bash is a cool way to spend a hot summer day. Test the swimming skills of your child and her friends at an aqua athletics celebration. Many municipal and county pools in Pittsburgh and the local area provide party package options. If you are looking for an urban setting, bring the group to one of the Citipark's pools such as Bloomfield, Schenley, Riverview, Banksville, West Penn or Fowler (city.pittsburgh.pa.us/parks). For a more suburban setting, try a county pool at North or South Park or the municipal pools of Mt. Lebanon, Dormont or Upper St. Clair.
Golf
From mini-golf to driving range-inspired parties, golf celebrations can be a special treat for kids of all ages. Pittsburgh locations such as the RMU Island Sports Center (rmuislandsports), Cool Springs (coolspringsgolfcenter.com) and Wildwood Highlands (wildwoodpa.com) all offer party packages for the golf lover. For example, RMU Island provides three choices that include the Birdie Party, Hole in One Party or Miniature Golf. These all come with admission for guests, two hours in the decorated party room and either use of the putting green or mini-golf course.
Basketball Bash
Young fans of the Pittsburgh Panthers, the University of Pittsburgh's college sports teams, can enjoy a basketball party at a live game. The Pitt Panthers women's basketball program offers a birthday party package that includes tickets for your guests, pizza and soft drinks, a birthday cake, special recognition on the game-day video board and a visit from the coach and Pitt cheerleaders. Additionally, the birthday child will receive a complimentary T-shirt.
