Ski Lodging in Red River, New Mexico

by Lisa Mercer Google

The Red River Ski Resort, situated at 8,750 feet, sits in the center of a former mining town. Seven lifts serve this family-friendly ski area, which offers 32 percent beginner, 38 percent intermediate and 30 percent advanced terrain. The town maintains its Victorian mining town ambiance, making it an enjoyable destination for history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts.

Getting Around Red River

Most lodging venues are just a short walk to the ski lifts, but the Red River Ski Resort is located in a high alpine environment, which means that ice easily accumulates on the sidewalks. If you choose lodging within walking distance to the lifts, wear shoes that provide adequate protection on ice. If you would rather walk in your ski boots, rubber sole coverings will protect your boots from damage. Red River Miner’s Transit provides free transportation throughout the town and to the ski area.

Condominiums, with their multiple rooms and full kitchens suit families and groups. The two-bedroom Edelweiss Condominiums are about two blocks from the chairlifts. Some even have a bunk room and sleeper sofas. The sledding hill behind the property appeals to families with children. Lifts West Condominiums boasts a dramatic main lobby, with a giant stone fireplace on one side and a glass-enclosed elevator on the other. Its studio, one- and two-bedroom units feature Southwestern decor. Some of the two-bedroom units have a loft and three bathrooms, making them suitable for larger groups. Auslander Condominiums are closest to the lifts. The building has one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom units, hot tub and a clubhouse for family and group gatherings. Southwestern wall hangings embellish the units. Some of the three- and four-bedroom condominiums have two levels.

River Cabins

The Rio Colorado Lodge sits on five acres, which dot the banks of the Red River. These rustic, pet-friendly, one-, two- and three-bedroom cabins have kitchens, a private fishing pond, playground and barbecue area. Wood paneling lines the cabin walls, and stone fireplaces or wood-burning stoves supply extra heat.

Remote Locations

Some lodging venues, such as the River Retreat Cabins, are about one mile from the resort, but they are convenient to the free shuttle bus. These cabins have queen beds and full kitchens, which offer extras such as crock-pots and mixers. Those traveling with recreational vehicles can stay at the Red River RV Park, located next to the River Retreat Cabins. The sites offer full RV hook-ups.
