Shasta Lake in northern California attracts visitors with its unspoiled lake and forest scenery and abundant opportunities for fishing, boating, water skiing and swimming. Lodging options near Shasta Lake do not include many hotels, but several motels, bed and breakfasts, rustic ranches and cottage resorts cater to overnight visitors. An alternative option is to rent a houseboat directly on the lake.

Shasta Dam Motel

Shasta Dam Motel is located on a scenic property surrounded by mature oak trees, just minutes from Shasta Lake. Its facilities include an outdoor swimming pool and large grassy picnic area with barbecues for guests' use. Wireless Internet access is available throughout the property, free of charge. The rustic-style, wood-paneled guest rooms at the motel feature one to four beds, a refrigerator, a microwave and a flat-screen television with cable channels. Budget-friendly room rates include a daily continental breakfast, and complimentary in-room coffee is also provided. AAA and AARP members enjoy discounted rates.

Coram Ranch

The 200-acre Coram Ranch sits alongside the Sacramento River on the site of an abandoned mining town, one mile away from Shasta Lake. The scenic property consists of private homes for rent, a main dining hall, a large swimming pool and a game room with pool, ping pong and video library. Family-friendly, on-site activities include horseshoes, boccie ball, fishing, floating on the river and mountain biking, all of which are included with house rental rates. Guided horseback riding excursions are offered twice daily for an additional fee. Guests rent the entire ranch, half the ranch or one of the individual houses. The houses all have full kitchens; Dogwood House and the River House, which offer uninterrupted views of the Sacramento River, both accommodate up to nine guests.

O'Brien Mountain Inn

O'Brien Mountain Inn, a bed and breakfast near Lake Shasta, offers four suites and four guest rooms, each of which is distinctive in decor and theme. The four guest rooms are named for musical styles -- Jazz, Classical, Folk and World Beat. Each has its own attractions, including a whirlpool bathtub and antique iron bed in the Jazz room; a private entrance leading to garden walk from the World Beat Room; and and French doors leading to a private patio in the Folk and Jazz rooms. Luke's Treehouse Suite is notable for being entirely separate from the main inn and set within the canopy of tall pines. Its features include a kitchenette, king sleigh bed, a vaulted ceiling and fireplace, as well as a covered porch accessible by a wooden bridge. Thoughtful touches such as fresh flowers, chocolates, candles and ultra-soft bathrobes in every room add a sense of luxury, while forest views create a peaceful atmosphere. Home-baked muffins and coffee are delivered to rooms and suites each morning, and a full breakfast is served in your choice of the dining room or the garden.

Sugarloaf Cottages Resort

Sugarloaf Cottages Resort offers cozy, self-catering guest cottages set along the shore of Shasta Lake, as well as a private dock from which guests fish, water ski and boat. Cottages with one, two or three pine-paneled bedrooms and two-bedroom townhouses are available, all with air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen and a covered porch with a picnic table and barbecue. Guests have access to an outdoor swimming pool from May until November. One boat slip is available for every cottage.
