How to Do a Shadow Coin Trick

by Brandy Burgess

Coin magic requires skill and swiftness to perform convincingly. One or more coins are manipulated by a magician to baffle the audience. To perform the shadow coin trick, a total of five quarters must be used. One of the quarters is always hidden in either the right or left hand and is not known by the audience members. Four quarters are placed into a square on a flat surface and made to disappear and reappear at different corners of the square. Performing the shadow coin trick requires intense practice to fool the audience.

Step 1

Cover a table with any color tablecloth to aid in the transport of the coins. Ensure that the tablecloth is completely smooth and that the coins glide over it easily. Audience members should stand over the table when the trick is performed as to not reveal the secret.

Step 2

Place four quarters onto the table to form a square. Each quarter should be approximately 6 inches away from one another. Flip all of the quarters so that they are all heads up or all tails up.

Step 3

Hide a fifth quarter in your right fist. Press the fifth quarter to center of your palm using your thumb. It's essential that no one sees that quarter that is hidden in your hand during the trick.

Step 4

Slide your right hand over the top-left quarter. Leave your left hand hovering over the bottom-right quarter. In a single swift motion, leave the quarter that was in your right hand with the top-left quarter and pick up the quarter from the bottom-right corner with your left hand.

Step 5

Repeat this motion with the top-right corner. Leave the quarter that is now in your left hand at the top-right corner. Pick up the quarter found at the top-left corner with your right hand.

Step 6

Repeat this motion with the bottom-left corner. Leave the quarter that is now in your right hand at the bottom-left corner. Pick up the quarter from the top-right corner with your left hand.

Step 7

Leave the quarter that is now in your left hand at the bottom-left corner. Pick up the quarter from the top-left corner and hide it in your right hand.

Step 8

Leave the quarter that is now hidden in your right hand at the bottom-right corner. Pick up the quarter at the top-right corner with your left hand. All four quarters should now appear in one corner.
