Secluded Cabins in South Carolina

by Joanne Thomas

Rental cabins can be found in some of South Carolina's most scenic parks and wilderness areas and are available through the state parks department and private companies alike. Cabins range from rustic shelters with very basic cooking and sleeping facilities to residential-style log homes with luxurious amenities and the capacity for large families and groups.

Devils Fork State Park Villas

South Carolina State Parks operates 20 modern villas for public rental in Devils Fork State Park. The park is a 622-acre wilderness area in Oconee County offering hiking trails and opportunities for fishing, boating and swimming in Lake Jocassee, a 7,500-acre reservoir. Villas with two or three bedrooms are available. They are all air conditioned and feature kitchen facilities, a television and a screened porch. An outdoor grill and picnic table is provided for each unit. The two-bedroom villas each accommodate up to six guests; the three-bedroom villas sleep up to eight.

Edisto River Treehouses

The Edisto River Treehouses are operated by Carolina Heritage Outfitters, an adventure company offering guided and self-guided canoe and kayak trips in the 150-acre Edisto River Refuge. The treehouses offer rustic accommodations within the refuge for visitors on overnight trips, housing two to eight guests each. There is also a camping cabin available, which features a loft bedroom, an additional futon, a gas stove and a charcoal grill. The genuine wood-plank treehouses raised on stilts in the forest canopy all overlook their own private creek area. Each unit is fully furnished with a kitchen, a screened sleeping area, and an outdoor dining deck with a barbecue grill. The use of a canoe is included in the rental price.

Keowee-Toxaway State Natural Area

The Keowee-Toxaway State Natural Area, a place of outstanding natural beauty offering views of the Blue Ridge and access to the remarkable Jocaseee Gorges, is managed by the South Carolina State Parks Department. The department offers one rental cabin within the 1,000-acre area. The three-bedroom cabin is fully furnished and has heating and air conditioning, basic kitchen facilities, an ice-maker and a washer/dryer. It also features two fireplaces and a satellite television. The cabin is beautifully situated, overlooking Lake Keowee, where it has a private boat dock. With a total of three queen beds, a bunk bed and a fold-out sofa, the cabin accommodates up to 10 guests.

Lake Greenwood Log Cabin Rentals

Lake Greenwood Log Cabin Rentals are available on a nightly or weekly basis. The red cypress wood cabins are located on the banks of Lake Greenwood and offer uninterrupted lake views. The large, two-story cabins feature two or three bedrooms, a full kitchen, a covered front porch with a hot tub, and a large back deck with a charcoal grill. Rustic features such as open beam vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors and large stone-clad fireplaces are complemented by luxurious Berber carpets and whirlpool bathtubs. A marina, restaurant and grocery store are found within minutes of the cabins. Guests with their own boat can utilize a shared 55-foot dock.
