As a growing city just outside of Charlotte, Kannapolis offers residents and visitors numerous recreation and entertainment options, from a music and motorsports museum to a minor league baseball team and numerous parks for outdoor recreation. And though Kannapolis sits landlocked nearly 300 miles from the coast, it also offers residents plenty of opportunities for scuba diving. While no scuba diving businesses currently exist in the city of Kannapolis, several options can be found in the immediate area and surrounding cities.

Lake Norman Scuba

Just under 20 miles from Kannapolis, Lake Norman Scuba (lakenormanscuba.com/Classes.html) in Lake Norman offers scuba classes and other scuba-related services. Scuba classes range from beginning open water to advanced divemaster classes and are open to kids as young as 10 years old. Other specialty classes offered include night diving, search and recovery diving and emergency first responder diving. All in-class training takes place at the Lake Norman Scuba business site and practice dives are done at a local pool and training quarry in Lake Norman. Other services include dive equipment sales and seminars like underwater photography.

Paradise Island Divers

Located about a half an hour south of Kannapolis, Paradise Island Divers (paradisedivers.com) in Charlotte also offers scuba classes and an on-site scuba retail shop. Training classes are offered in a private setting that allows for one-on-one attention, and book work may be completed at home. Beginners to advanced divers can sign up for classes that include basic open dive certification, sport diving and navigational diving. Paradise Island’s retail shops sells all the major brands of dive equipment, is open six days a week and features an on-site diving well for customers to actually try out the equipment. Additionally, Paradise Island sponsors a number of dive trips each year, traveling to various dive sites up and down the Carolina coasts.

Open Water Adventures

Also found in Charlotte, about a 30-minute drive from Kannapolis, Open Water Adventures (openwateradventures.com) gives divers of all levels access to training classes, an online retail store and other water-related classes. Divers can choose from classes like beginning open water, advanced open water, scuba rangers and even a Scuba for Kids class for children as young as eight. Along with dive training, Open Water Adventures also offers swimming and lifeguard classes. The online retail store sells a variety of scuba gear brands and ships all over the United States. For customers looking to test out their newly-acquired scuba skills, Open Water Adventures runs scuba trips to dive destinations like the North Carolina coast, Florida, Mexico and Galapagos.

Neptune’s Locker Diving Center

Found on the southside of Charlotte in Indian Trail, Neptune’s Locker Diving Center (neptuneslockerdiving.com) is an easy 45 minute drive for residents of Kannapolis. Six types of dive training classes are offered for all levels of divers, including beginner, junior and advanced. Classes take place in a group setting of six to eight people, and the tuition costs include all books, pool and quarry dives and equipment rental. Other services offered by Neptune’s Locker include an online retail store, diving clubs for kids and adults and dive trips and special events.
