During 2009, there were almost 75,000 skateboarding accidents that affected children, according to Safe Kids USA. One of the first lessons any young skateboarder must learn is how to remain safe while still having fun. Falling from a skateboard improperly or without the correct gear could lead to injuries far beyond scrapes and bruises. This rudimentary knowledge of safety will help the skateboarder transition from beginner to X Games level with fewer injuries.

Wear the proper safety gear. This begins with a helmet that fits snugly, but does not restrict the rider's view or hearing and is not too tight. Also include knee pads and elbow pads that are intended for the rider's age and weight. According to Teens Health, mouthguards, gloves, wrist braces and hip pads are recommended for beginners and younger skateboarders.
Choose a pair of shoes that are specifically designed for skateboarding. Otherwise, wear shoes that have a thick, heavy sole and are constructed from strong material that will protect your feet and ankles during a fall.
Perform a safety check before hopping on your skateboard. Check for loose wheels, cracks or any other issues that will make the board unsafe.
Examine the riding area. Remain on surfaces that are designated for riding, such as skate parks, or other spots that are free of rocks and twigs. Steer clear of areas that are covered with cracks, stones and uneven surfaces. According to Teens Health, half of all skateboard-related injuries are caused by improper riding surfaces.
Avoid riding the board on the streets, grabbing onto the back of moving vehicles or attempting tricks that are above your level of expertise. If there are signs posted in your town that do not allow skateboarding on sidewalks or parks, obey these laws as well.
Learn how to fall correctly. Crouch down on your board, relax your body and attempt to land on your side or roll. Practice falling on your yard or bed to help you prepare for this possibility.
