The only thing richer than the soil in Indiana might be its possibilities for adventure. Contrary to a popular perception of Indiana as a flat, boring place, the Hoosier state is in fact beautiful and dynamic, filled with romantic opportunities for lovers of all ages and stages in the fall and all year round.
Brown County State Park
Brown County State Park, in the south-central Indiana city of Nashville, is Indiana's largest state park and is well-suited for couples seeking a romantic atmosphere. The park has miles of scenic hiking and horse-riding trails for many skill levels, all shaded by an abundance of trees showing off their fall colors and overlooking big, shining lakes. The surrounding town of Nashville is a famous artists colony with scenic gazebos, little bed and breakfasts, and sweetheart cabins.
The famous Notre Dame campus in South Bend is buzzing with activity in the fall. Of course there are the Fighting Irish football games at Notre Dame Stadium, but the campus itself is beautiful, canopied in trees and filled with European-style architecture, making for a romantic stroll. On the stroll, check out the main building with the Golden Dome and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart next door for its stunningly ornate and detailed interior.
Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra
The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is world-renowned and one of the few in the world that plays 52 weeks per year. For those who don't like classical music, the orchestra's Coffee Pops series features Hollywood and Broadway soundtrack music, guest vocalists, and free coffee and pastries. The orchestra plays in the historic Hilbert Circle Theater, a 1920s movie-palace-turned-live-theater with outstanding acoustics -- a romantic event for a music-loving couple.
The Canal and White River State Park in Indianapolis is in the heart of the city. Couples can take the Canal Walk through the city, visiting shops, restaurants, museums and the zoo along the way. Sports lovers can catch a baseball game together at Victory Field, rated by Sports Illustrated and Baseball America as the best minor league ballpark in America. The most romantic option, however, might be taking a paddle boat or gondola ride down the Canal.
