Romantic Themes for Weekend Getaways in Illinois

by Alana Armstrong

Illinois has countless romantic activities for couples. Visiting couples can even build a romantic Illinois getaway around a theme, which if done as a surprise for one's significant other will come off as an especially thoughtful gesture. Whether they call Illinois home, or this is a first time visit, couples will find all the amenities they'll need to enjoy a charming and romantic getaway.

First Date

Think back to your first date together, then try to recreate it in the spectacular city of Chicago. Start with a hand-in-hand walk along the 18-mile Lakefront Trail, a ride on the ferris wheel at Navy Wharf, or a flick at the historic Chicago Theatre (thechicagotheatre.com). Finish the day with a view from the top of the Sears Tower, or share a banana split from Margie's Candies (margiescandies.nv.switchboard.com) in the Bucktown area. On Wednesdays and Saturdays during the summer, the tall ship "Windy" (tallshipwindy.com) takes visitors along the waterfront to view the Navy Pier fireworks.

Relaxation and Revitalization

Head to Rockford, Illinois to stage a romantic getaway that reconnects you by easing away everyday stresses. Take a hand-in-hand stroll through the 12 acres of whimsical scenery at Anderson Japanese Garden (andersongardens.org). From May to October, the garden offers guided tours for $9 or self-guided tours for $6 (as of 2011). Hour long couple's massages are $75 at thexperience Spa (experiencespa.org). At the end of each day, rest your head at the Hilton Garden Inn where you can book a Romance Hotel Break Package that includes early check-in, a bottle of sparkling wine and breakfast for two.

Foodie Delights

Start with a wine tasting at the Famous Fossil Winery (famousfossilwinery.com) in Freeport, where you can score a bottle or case of your favorite. Book your room at Prairie Path Guest House in Mt. Carroll, which grows its own fruits and vegetables on 36 acres of gardens and forests. Prairie Path is a short drive from the Mt. Carroll Farmer's Market where you can pick up everything you'll need to pack a gourmet basket for a countryside picnic.

Traditional Illinois

Book a room at the Beall Mansion (beallmansion.com) bed and breakfast in Alton and be transported to another time in Illinois history. The Beall Mansion itself is an historic site and offers guided tours around the museum housed within. Play a round of golf on Alton's refined Spencer T. Olin Golf Course (spencertolingolf.com) and end the day with a show at the Alton Little Theater (altonlittletheater.org) which has been staging live performances since 1934.
