River gondolas meander alongside San Antonio's famed River Walk, while the click-clack of horse-drawn carriages echoes off nearby cobblestone streets. Sweeping terraces and tables topped with crisp white tablecloths invite diners, and couples walk under dim lighting along the river's edge. San Antonio's River Walk is a romantic escape, and many of the area's hotels offer accommodations couples will find enchanting.

Hotel Valencia Riverwalk

Hotel Valencia mimics the ambiance of San Antonio's River Walk, combining old-world elements with contemporary flair. The hotel mixes classically inspired features like archways and columns with modern design components such as polished concrete. Guestrooms are modern, with 18-foot ebony credenzas, custom beds and flat-screen televisions. The hotel received a Conde Nast Traveler 2010 Readers' Choice Award as one of America's Top 100 Hotels. Romantic amenities include turn-down service, balconies overlooking the courtyard or riverbank, marble baths, bathrobes and Egyptian cotton linens. Hotel Valencia's Citrus Restaurant & Vbar overlook the River Walk, providing an intimate setting for dinners and aperitifs. The hotel has 213 rooms, fitness and business centers, hotel-wide Wi-Fi and event space for weddings and meetings.

Mokara Hotel & Spa

The Mokara Hotel, formerly the Watermark Hotel & Spa, is one of the River Walk's most prestigious addresses. The only San Antonio hotel to receive four stars from Forbes Travel Guide and the No. 21 hotel in America on Conde Nast Traveler's 2010 Readers' Choice Awards list, Mokara is a boutique property offering luxury inside a 19th-century building. Rooms have Jacuzzi tubs, hardwood floors, white linens and marble finishings. The Mokara offers a riverfront restaurant, fitness center and concierge service. The Mokara Spa was one of Conde Nast Traveler's Top Spas in 2010.

Hotel Contessa Suites on the Riverwalk

For couples wishing to leave the world behind, not many River Walk hotels afford accommodations like Hotel Contessa. Each suite features a separate bedroom and parlor, providing some of the largest rooms in the area. Suites feature exposed brickwork, flat-screen televisions, large bathrooms and either city or River Walk views. The hotel's signature restaurant, Las Ramblas, serves Spanish fare along the riverbank. Other amenities include a full-service spa, rooftop pool and fitness center. Hotel Contessa has a romance package that includes accommodations, Segura Viudas Champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries.

The Oge House Inn on the Riverwalk

Housed inside a 19th-century Southern mansion, The Oge House is a bed and breakfast providing 10 distinctive rooms. This is the place for couples to escape the largeness of most River Walk hotels and experience the quaint ambiance of San Antonio's King William Historic District. The inn sits along the San Antonio River, less than a half mile from downtown, in a serene setting most River Walk hotels lack. A sweeping veranda overlooking manicured lawns, a Victorian-style grand foyer and a library add to the intimate setting. Each morning a gourmet breakfast is served at private tables.
