Romantic Resorts in Charleston

by Jean Mann

Just try to find a more romantic city than Charleston, South Carolina. This picture postcard of historic and literary acclaim earned its reputation through a combination of sultry summer nights that linger like a kiss, acres and acres of hanging gardens, preserved mansions, and an air of gentility as well preserved as the cobblestone streets and ironwork. Couples looking for a romantic interlude have many choices.

Wentworth Mansion

If you're looking for an opulent weekend for two right in the city, the Wentworth Mansion offers a romance package to start off right. This beautiful mansion, built as a private residence about 1886 for the wealthy Francis Silas Rodgers, is in a romantic setting itself: the historic area. Staff will greet you with a floral arrangement, chocolate-covered strawberries and a bottle of Champagne, as well as a gift certificate for the mansion's charming restaurant, Circa 1886. Complimentary cordials are served in the Rodgers Library. You might even choose a pre-dinner couple’s massage in the intimate Spa at Wentworth Mansion. Afterward, retire to your large, tastefully decorated mansion bedroom to rest up for another day of sightseeing.

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island

The Sanctuary Hotel at Kiawah Island Resort is a modern seaside mansion that exudes the relaxed charm of the area. The Sanctuary's 255 rooms and suites are large, with the smallest measuring more than 500 square feet. The rooms all have custom-made beds, handcrafted desks and private sitting areas. The beach at this resort outside Charleston is long and sandy, a romantic spot for a barefoot evening stroll. Five championship golf courses, pools and a spa complete the picture. The hotel's romance package includes a candlelight dinner at the seaside Ocean Room, bicycle rental, a canoe tour and a breakfast buffet.

Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina

If you find romance in the sea, head for the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina, where the 130 rooms and suites, some with fireplaces, sport a nautical yellow-and-blue decor and views out to the harbor and marina. The hotel, east of Charleston's historic district, is the perfect place to watch the sunset from your own private balcony, or you can hear live music on the beach. Charter a luxury yacht, take sailing lessons, walk the nearby nature trails, or take a water taxi half a nautical mile over to downtown Charleston. The resort's restaurant, Indigo Grille, specializes in regional Southern cuisine. Dine outside on the Sunset deck or choose an oyster roast on the beach. If romance overtakes you, there's even a wedding pier.

The Boardwalk Inn at Wild Dunes

The Boardwalk Inn is right in the middle of the large Wild Dunes Resort on the Isle of Palms, outside Charleston. Inn guests can partake of all the amenities at this resort, including its famous tennis facilities, two golf courses, a spa, pools, six restaurants and a long stretch of clean, white beach that was refurbished in 2008 after beach erosion. Seven different couples and romance packages are offered, offering options from spa and Champagne to bed and breakfast.
