Romantic Hotels in Wichita

by Christine Switzer

Even though Wichita’s roots stretch toward the glory days of cattle and cow towns, this southeastern Kansas city still has much to offer by way of romance. Unique boutiques and memorable galleries cluster throughout the historic Old Town district, and gardens and museums, such as Botanica, the Wichita Gardens and the Wichita Art Museum, scatter around the Arkansas River. For lodging, consider a number of tempting options in Wichita.

The Castle Inn Riverside

Revel in the romance of an earlier era at The Castle Inn Riverside, a National Register of Historic Places property in downtown Wichita. Housed in the circa-1880s Campbell Castle, the hotel nestles along the banks of the Little Arkansas and boasts an imported 275-year-old staircase and 700-year-old Grecian fireplace in the Grand Foyer, as well as stained glass and mosaic flooring. Linger in guest rooms that tempt with detailed woodwork, period furnishings and cozy fireplaces. Enjoy a home-cooked breakfast before heading out for sightseeing, and wrap the day with complimentary wine, cheese, coffee and dessert on the weekends.

Hotel at Old Town

Relax in turn-of-the-century elegance at the Hotel at Old Town, a converted warehouse that blends Victorian-style furnishings and décor with modern-day amenities and luxuries. Guest rooms and suites offer striking city views and refined yet comfortable accommodations, including whirlpool tubs and fully equipped kitchens. Sit down to a complimentary hot breakfast before wandering through nearby Old Town shops, galleries and cafés, such as Artists at Old Town and Old Mill Tasty Shop. Enjoy dinner for two at the Larkspur Restaurant and Grill or the Uptown Bistro, and then settle under the stars for live music at the Farm and Art Market Plaza.

The Inn at Willowbend

Recharge amid sprawling grounds and cozy rooms at the Inn at Willowbend, located close to the northeastern edge of the city. The stucco inn’s guest rooms and suites overlook an 18-hole championship golf course and feature fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. Choose the Stay and Play package and enjoy a complimentary hot breakfast as well as a game for two. Spend the afternoon exploring nearby attractions such as the Wichita Center for the Arts, the Wichita Greyhound Park and the Coutts Museum of Art. For dinner, savor tasty comfort food at the Scotch and Sirloin or ale and venison at the River City Brewery, both in Old Town.

Hyatt Regency Wichita

Reconnect and refresh at the Hyatt Regency Wichita, tucked along the eastern bank of the Arkansas River. Guest rooms afford sweeping views of the river and the city skyline and feature simple, tasteful furnishings and hypo-allergenic linens. Choose the Romance Package and enjoy chocolate truffles and champagne upon check-in, as well as a complimentary breakfast for two. Start your day with a dip in the indoor pool or a workout at the fitness center, and then head out for a day of shopping and sightseeing at the nearby Old Town district. For dinner, sample locally sourced cuisine at the hotel’s Harvest Kitchen, and then canoodle over cocktails in the adjacent bar.
