How to Get the Right Size Motocross Helmet

by Mike Johnson

The sport of motocross involves racing on motorcycles. As you can imagine, the sport can get very dangerous if you don't have the proper equipment. Your helmet remains one of the most important and effective pieces of equipment to use in motocross, but and improper fit compromises its effectiveness. Get the right size motocross helmet before you compete.

Items you will need

  • Cloth tape measure
Step 1

Measure the circumference of the widest part of your head, typically about an inch above your eyebrows and ears.

Step 2

Check the sizing chart for the motocross helmet brand you plan to purchase. Each brand will have its own chart. For example, a medium-sized helmet might fit a head measurement between 22 and 23 inches.

Step 3

Try on the helmet recommended by the sizing chart. Pull the helmet over your ears and adjust the chin strap. Your head should touch the inside of the top of the helmet, and the helmet sides should be over your ears for the right fit. It should not feel too loose, or uncomfortably tight.

Step 4

Try on the next larger or smaller helmet size if you do not get a good fit from the first helmet. Keep looking until you find the right size.

Tips & Warnings

  • Motocross helmet manufacturers often include hat sizes and the corresponding helmet on their sizing charts. If you know your hat size, it can help you find the right motocross helmet.
