Rhubarb Festival in Duluth, Minnesota

by Melissa Bajorek

The Rhubarb Festival in Duluth, Minnesota, is an annual June event hosted by Churches United in Ministry. The Churches United in Ministry provides social programs including emergency food, shelter and outreach to more than 7,000 people in need every year. Festival-goers experience a bake sale, silent auction, stage shows and children's activities. Rhubarb-based foods, especially pies, are the primary culinary attraction for foodies. And best of all, the event is entirely free for the whole family!

Bake Sale

The CHUM website says Rhubarb Festival visitors can sample and purchase hundreds of pies. Try rhubarb pies, rhubarb strawberry pies and rhubarb blueberry pies. If you prefer baking your own pie fresh, purchase "Take and Bake" rhubarb pies, meant to be baked in your home oven. At the Rhubarb Festival in Duluth, you'll learn that rhubarb is great for dozens of other recipes too. You will find rhubarb muffins, cakes, pound cake, bread, struesel bars, jams and preserves.

Silent Auction

A silent auction allows bidders to spend time deciding on the value of an auction item. Silent auction-goers write down a bid they feel is fair for the item being sold, then come back to check on items and make higher bids. The silent auction at the Rhubarb Festival in Duluth, Minnesota, offers hundreds of items for bidders every year. During the 2011 festival, auction items included works by local artisans and gift certificates and items from Duluth area businesses. A related event during the 2011 festival was a 50 ticket limited raffle for a pair of diamond earrings provided.

Other Events

In addition to the bake sale and silent auction, the Rhubarb Festival offers a host of events for folks of all ages. Children can take part in a children's race and coloring contest, horticulturalists can learn all about rhubarb from master gardeners and everyone can purchase Rhubarb Festival goods like aprons and posters. Check out the stage to see entertaining shows all day long, starting with the children's race at 9 a.m.

On Stage

During the 2011 Rhubarb Festival stage acts included the Rhubarb Blessing, a Bollywood dancer, The Rhubarb Sisters, a Celebrity Chef "Cook-Off" and announcement of the Largest Rhubarb Stalk and Largest Rhubarb Leaf contest winners.

The Rhubarb Festival is located at the intersection of 11th Ave East and London Road, in Duluth, Minnesota. A map for parking and directions is available in Resources.
