Quilting Camps in Rains County, Texas

by Karen Smith, Demand Media

Rains County is located east of Dallas in northern Texas; its capital city, Emory, is home to a large quilt shop called Stitchin Memories. While Stitchin Memories offers a variety of daily programs, clubs and classes, if you're seeking to attend a quilting camp or retreat you will need to drive about one to four hours to a camping or retreat center outside of Rains County.

Stitchin' Heaven at the Brookhaven Retreat Center

Stitchin' Heaven is a Quilt shop in Quiltman, Texas, located in Wood County just 22 miles from Emory. The shop's owners periodically organize quilting retreats at the Brookhaven Retreat Center, which is 43 miles southeast of Emory. The objective of their retreats is to provide attendees with a place to sew all they want while enjoying rest and relaxation with friends. They offer demonstrations and mini-lectures along with fun extracurricular events like Death by Chocolate Night and an Anti-Aging Seminar.

The Compass Centre at Mount Calm

The Compass Centre is located in Mount Calm, TX, 118 miles from Emory. This retreat center is designed for quilters as well as other kinds of crafters and artists. Guests have access to large areas of work space, cutting and ironing centers and ergonomically designed sewing chairs. They enjoy meals on the premises and sleep in beds each of which has a custom-made quilt. Quilting supplies like rotary blades, needles, thread and fabric can be purchased there. Guests also receive discounts at two nearby quilting shops in Waco.

Quilt Camp at Great Expectations Creativity Center

Great Expectations Creativity Center is in La Grange, located 260 miles from Emory. Quilts, Inc. in Houston hosts an annual weekend quilting event open to beginning or advanced quilters doing with traditional or art quilting. Attendees can stay either in dorms onsite or at a nearby hotel. Daily instruction is offered on a topic that changes each year. Bring your sewing machine and quilting supplies; the center will provide irons, ironing surfaces, large rotary cutting surfaces and some rulers and cutters.

    Quilting Adventures

Quilting Adventures is a mother-daughter team based in the Texas Hill Country that hosts weekend and five-day quilting seminars throughout the country. Often their seminars are at T-Bar-M Resort in New Braunfels, located 290 miles from Emory (south of Austin), but they have also organized retreats in other Texas locations like Smithville and Round Top. Classes are taught for about six hours each day by nationally known quilting instructors. Attendees spend the rest of the time quilting, socializing and enjoying recreational activities amidst beautiful surroundings.
