All over the State of Michigan, fall is pumpkin picking time. Many of the pumpkin farms feature other fruits and vegetables, apple cider and activities for the entire family, such as hay rides, petting zoos, farm tours and picnic parks. Some have restaurants, haunted houses and gift shops. All pumpkin farms that are open to the public welcome the entire family for a day of pumpkin picking and autumn fun.

A.W. Overhiser Orchards

A.W. Overheiser Orchards in South Haven, Michigan (overhiserorchards.com) has a picking season of July 1 through October 31 for fruits and vegetables and is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pumpkins are in season at A.W. Overhiser Orchards beginning the first day of October. There is a small animal barn that offers "hands-on" experience in feeding and caring for the animals. Mingling among the animals, you will find the five Overhiser children who love to talk about their animals and answer questions.

The Pumpkin Farm

The Pumpkin Farm in Standish, Michigan (no web address; 989-846-2251) offers pre-picked pumpkins in addition to those still on the vine and ready to pick. A day at The Pumpkin Farm may include tractor-pulled hay rides, a petting zoo, farm animals, a gift shop and a picnic area. Other attractions at The Pumpkin Farm include a bouncy castle and facilities for birthday parties and school field trips. The Pumpkin Farm is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can bring the entire family and visit the children's haunted house or treat the kids to face painting. Admission to The Pumpkin Farm is $4.00 per person.

Papa's Pumpkin Patch

Papa's Pumpkin Patch (papasfamilyfarm.com) is in the countryside outside of Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Pumpkins at Papa's Pumpkin Patch are ready for picking at the beginning in October. The farm offers hayrides, farm parties, toy shopping, a playground center and rides on the Pumpkin Train. Families are encouraged to make a yearly fall tradition of visiting Papa's Pumpkin Patch.

Meckley's Flavor Fruit Farm

Meckley's Flavor Fruit Farm in Somerset, Michigan (flavorfruitfarm.com) has a nine acre pumpkin patch where you can pick your own pumpkins beginning in October. There is also a corn maze, a café, a bakery, a petting zoo, a gift shop and a cider barn where Meckley's very own homemade cider is featured for your enjoyment. You can easily spend a whole day taking in the sights and activities of Meckley's.
