Give your youngster a party she won't soon forget by combining a pool-side birthday celebration with a special party theme. Send out invitations, plan contests or activities, then serve food and birthday cake all in keeping with the chosen party theme to make the event a day to remember.

Hawaiian Luau

Start the luau theme with an invitation written on a large sea shell in magic marker. Hold a hula hoop contest with the winner being the guest who can keep it going the longest with two attempts. The champ gets a fancy Hawaiian lei necklace. Let the food be light and flavorful like skewers of beef, chicken and cut vegetables. A hula-girl shaped cake will be a terrific way to wish the birthday girl a happy birthday in a luau theme.

Beach Party Around the Pool

Pass out beach party birthday invitations written on a blown-up beach balls in permanent marker. Hold a beach ball volley ball tournament in the pool and give the winning team inexpensive gift certificates to a kid-friendly local restaurant as their prize. Serve a picnic lunch menu like ready-made sub sandwiches, slices of cool watermelon, chips and soda. Then present the guest of honor with a beach scene birthday cake as a finish to the beach theme party.

Swim Fest Competition

Send out invitations connected to an inexpensive dollar-store plastic starter's whistle announcing a combination swim fest and birthday party. Hold swim fest competitions like pool racing, diving for plastic coins and seeing who can hold their breath underwater the longest. Winners get homemade ribbons and award-themed bracelets, necklaces or rings as their prize. Keep the menu light with small finger foods like sandwich quarters or fresh fruit cubes that won't interfere with activities. The birthday song will be celebrated with the ultimate prize of a trophy-shaped cake with icing engraved to the birthday girl.

A Spa Day by the Pool

A pair of flip-flops tied with curling ribbon will be the perfect spa day birthday invitation when you attach a tag with the party information. Provide colorful tubes of peel-off mask for girly facials, then have the girls give each other manicures and pedicures with a fresh stash of supplies you provide. Serve pool side alcohol-free frozen drinks in large plastic martini glasses with individual quiche dishes for each guest as lunch. A healthy dose of carrot cake with candles will put the finishing touch on this spa day birthday theme.
