If you're looking to host a sweet birthday bash for your Sweet 16 and you live in Scottsdale, Ariz., then, well, sweet. Whether your daughter is athletic and always on the move, likes a bit of quiet with some stellar conversation, or would rather share the day with a lot of friends and family, there's something in Scottsdale for her. Now it's just up to you to pick the venue -- and pick up the check!
Hotel Valley Ho's Oh Pool
The "Oh Pool" at the Hotel Valley Ho is well known to Scottsdale locals. In fact, "Travel + Leisure" magazine named the pool one of the coolest in the world because of its retro-50s vibe and martini-glass shape. You don't have to be a hotel guest to enjoy the pool or rent one of its spiffy cabanas for a swinging Sweet 16. It's a popular place, so book early. And let your daughter know that rock stars like Katy Perry and John Legend have played poolside.
The 120,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art ice skating and entertainment center, practice home for the National Hockey League's Phoenix Coyotes, is also available for public ice skating and birthday parties. Several birthday packages are available, some of which include private skating lessons and a ride on the Zamboni (who doesn't want to ride the Zamboni?) You can also go super simple and rent a private sheet of ice for your daughter and her friends.
Spectacular views and inspiring vistas will prompt conversation from your daughter and her guests as they sit down at The Phoenician Resort for traditional afternoon tea. Afternoon tea is served in the Lobby Tea Court weekday afternoons and includes finger sandwiches, scones with Devonshire cream, pastries and a selection of teas.
A Hike and a Swim
Scottsdale offers a wide array of public parks and aquatic centers for those teens who enjoy a more low-key or outdoorsy birthday. Outdoor facilities include the Cactus Park and Aquatic Center, which boasts a lighted sand volleyball court. Chaparral Park and Community Center offers a 10-acre lake for boating and fishing. To reserve a park facility, call the Facility Booking Office.
Hermosa Inn Artist in Residency Program
If your daughter is creative, then the Hermosa Inn, a boutique hideaway on the outskirts of Scottsdale, is the place for her. Besides hosting cooking lessons and private dinners both in the garden and in its wine cellar, the inn is home to a unique artist-in-residence program. The program is designed to bring guests and the artist together for lively conversation and an evening of fine dining. Past artists include actress Jane Seymour, author Clive Cussler and newsman Hugh Downs.
