The city of Pittsburgh has gradually enhanced its former image as a smoggy steel town and attracted more visitors over the years, as evidenced by its hosting of the 2006 Major League Baseball All-Star Week and the 2009 G-20 Summit. Such events have helped contribute to a hotel building boom in Pittsburgh, according to Fodor's Travel Guide. This boom has produced many more lodging choices for travelers. Mid-range and upscale hotels abound in and around the city center, while more budget-friendly motel accommodations can be found primarily near the interstate highways on the outskirts of town.
Motel 6, a large national chain, operates three motels in the immediate Pittsburgh area. Known for low rates and reliable service, Motel 6 offers a basic range of amenities and a pets-welcome policy at all of their locations. The individual motel branches surrounding Pittsburgh also have a few unique perks which stand out. The Motel 6 Pittsburgh-Airport branch features interior corridors, a coin laundry facility and mini-fridges in all rooms. A few miles away sits the Motel 6 Pittsburgh-Crafton, which is positioned directly on a public bus line near the Robinson Town Center Mall. There's also a Motel 6 Pittsburgh-Cranberry branch to the north of the city center. Local attractions here include the Warrendale BladeRunners Ice Complex as well as Moraine State Park and McConnell's Mill State Park, both of which lie less than 30 minutes away by car.
Another national chain with branches surrounding Pittsburgh is Super 8. Super 8 is comparable to Motel 6, but Super 8 boasts a few extra services like free continental breakfast and free access to high speed internet. The Super 8 Pittsburgh-Airport motel offers a complimentary airport shuttle along with a special parking lot for trucks and rigs. To the east of the city center is the Super 8 Pittsburgh-Harmarville motel. This branch puts guests right near a shopping center with places like Target, Giant Eagle Grocery Store and a bevy of fast food restaurants. Additionally, the Harmarville BladeRunners Ice Complex is located nearby. The Super 8 Pittsburgh-Monroeville motel also lies to the east of the city. This facility has a modest meeting room for events and conferences, and the retail stores and restaurants of Monroeville Mall are also conveniently close. Finally, the Super 8 Pittsburgh-Mars-Cranberry branch sits to the north of town next to the Venango Trail Golf Course and the Cranberry Mall.
The Neville Motel occupies a small patch on Neville Island in the middle of the Ohio River just west of downtown Pittsburgh. This location provides easy access to Robert Morris University, the RMU Island Sports Center and the Pittsburgh International Airport. The Neville Motel is a "mom and pop" establishments with clean rooms that have different themes and tiny details. For instance, one of the rooms has a western theme and includes little adhesive stars on the ceiling that glow in the dark to simulate the desert sky at night. Aside from the whimsical decor, all rooms come equipped with a microwave and a refrigerator.
Another independently run motel in the Pittsburgh area is the Valley Motel. Situated to the east of town in the district of Harmarville, the Valley Motel has standard rooms as well as a couple of jacuzzi suites. As a bonus, DVD players and refrigerators come in every room. The motel does enforce a no-pets policy, so traveling pet owners may want to look elsewhere. A Ponderosa Steakhouse restaurants sits adjacent to the motel along with Alexander's Athletic Club, which offers a decent fitness facility for travelers looking to keep up their exercise routines on the road.
