Geometric or artistic swirls are painted onto a ceiling with interior texture paint. The swirls are made after the paint has been applied to the ceiling with a paint roller. After the textured coat is dried, a topcoat is applied. This texture-making process creates the illusion that the paint has been swirled onto the ceiling, giving your room an interesting and trendy look.
Items you will need
- Interior texture paint
- 5-gallon paint bucket
- Paint stir stick
- Nylon/polyester paintbrush, 2 1/2 inches wide
- 5-gallon metal bucket grid
- Looped paint roller with extender pole
- Sea sponge
- Nylon gloves
- Topcoat interior paint
Pour the interior texture paint into a 5-gallon paint bucket. Stir it thoroughly with a paint stir stick.
Dip the paintbrush into the texture paint and tap the brush on the side of the bucket to remove the excess paint. Paint around the perimeter of the ceiling.
Insert a 5-gallon metal bucket grid into the bucket, with the hanging arms positioned on the top edge of the bucket. Dip the paint roller into the bucket, then run up along the bucket grid to create texture on the roller.
Apply the paint in 3-by-3-foot sections, starting at one corner of the ceiling. Roll the paint onto the ceiling by making a "W" shape with the paint. Run the roller over the section until you have filled in the "W" with paint. Paint the rest of the ceiling in 3-by-3-foot sections. Wait 20 minutes before applying the next coat to the ceiling.
Apply a new coat of the texture paint to the first 3-by-3-foot square with the paint roller. Wait five minutes. Wet down a sea sponge and put on vinyl gloves. Press the sponge into the paint and twist it to create artistic swirls.
Apply the new coat to each section working in 3-by-3-foot sections, wait five minutes, then twist the sponge into the paint to make swirls on the ceiling. Continue adding the second coat and making swirls in it until you have covered the entire ceiling with a swirled layer of paint. Wait 24 hours for the textured paint to dry and cure.
Cover the swirled textured paint with a topcoat of interior paint, painting in the same "W" formation as before.
