Pageants in New York

Pageants are competitions that offer opportunities to young women and focus on physical beauty, personality, talent and intelligence. Based on the contestants' appearance and performance, judges determine the winners of a pageant. Those who win a contest in New York may have the opportunity to complete in pageants at the national and international level. Winners often make appearances representing the organization, make speeches at school and charity events, and receive prize money and scholarship opportunities.

Miss New York USA

The Miss New York USA ( pageant takes place each year and judges competitors in three areas -- an interview, swimsuit and evening gown. In order to be eligible for the pageant, applicants need to be 18 to 27 years old, never been married, have no children, and be residents of New York or have lived in the state for at least six months. Winners of the pageant go on to compete in the Miss USA Pageant.

Miss Brooklyn Scholarship Competition

The Miss Brooklyn Scholarship Competition ( offers scholarships to women who want to pursue higher education and live in one of New York City's five boroughs. Applicants must be 13 to 17 years old. Areas of competition include an interview, talent, lifestyle and physical fitness, evening wear and an onstage question. At the time of publication, candidates must pay a $150 application fee.

Miss New York State

Miss New York State ( is a beauty pageant for young women ages 17 to 24 years old who live, work or go to school in the state. The organization offers scholarship opportunities and focuses on community-service projects. The goal of the pageant is to recognize the talent, character, commitment and intelligence of young women in the state. Applicants need to be high-school graduates, unmarried and have no children.

Miss NY Chinese

Miss NY Chinese ( has been taking place since 2002 and winners go on to compete in the Miss International Chinese Pageant in Hong Kong. The beauty pageant offers young woman a chance to demonstrate their cultural pride, family values, leadership and confidence. Applicants must be 17 to 25, at least 5 feet 2 inches tall, single and never pregnant, and have no criminal record.
