The next time you're in Oregon, take some time to visit the distinctive towns that embellish its coastline. The coast extends from Astoria in the north to Brookings in southern Oregon. Each coastal town has its signature food, festival or special event and offers an eclectic mix of hotels.
When Goody Cable and her childhood friend Sally Ford opened the oceanfront Sylvia Beach Hotel, they decided not to offer Internet access, television or telephones. In its stead, they designated the west side of the hotel's third floor as the library area and filled it with books, comfortable couches and a wood-burning fireplace. The oceanfront and ocean-view rooms are named after authors known for their love of the ocean, including Colette, Mark Twain, Hemingway and Edgar Allen Poe. Breakfast is included in the room rate. The Sylvia Beach Hotel is located in Newport, Oregon.
Otter Rock, hidden between Newport and Lincoln City, is home to the Devil's Punch Bowl. The collapse of two sea cave roofs created this intriguing phenomenon, which causes the surf to churn and swirl like a witch's brew. The oceanfront suites at Otter Rock's Inn at Otter Crest have kitchenettes; but if you visit in the summer, you'll want to eat at least one meal at the hotel's Flying Dutchman Restaurant. Go for brunch and enjoy the Crab Cakes Benedict, served with a sweet chili sauce. The restaurant's owners also own the Flying Dutchman Winery, located in Otter Rock. Next door, a woman known as the "ice cream lady" works out of a 1934 Dodge truck, selling old-fashioned ice cream, candy and snacks.
Seaside, Oregon, is home to the Promenade, an 8,000-foot boardwalk that separates the town from the beach. A carousel and an abundance of T-shirt and souvenir shops give the town a carnival atmosphere, which is less conducive to retreat and relaxation but suitable for a fun family vacation. The Best Western Ocean View Resort in Seaside is a 15-minute drive from the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park. The hotel's oceanfront suites have kitchenettes and private balconies.
Yachats is located near the southern section of the Oregon coast. The area is known for its art galleries, covered bridges and lighthouses. Overleaf Lodge, located in Yachats, has a full-service spa that offers an extensive menu of services. The hotel offers Girls Getaway packages, which include lodging, $90 toward a spa treatment and a box of chocolates to share. The oceanfront rooms at the Overleaf Lodge have small kitchens and patios. Breakfast is included in the room rate.
