Ohio Mom & Pop Hotels

by Meg Jernigan

Mom and pop hotels, scattered across Ohio, are uniformly budget-friendly. Few offer the amenities of the chains, but they do provide travelers with a safe, reasonably priced place to sleep. Mini-fridges and microwave ovens, quickly becoming standard amenities for any hotel, are harder to find in Ohio mom and pop hotels, and swimming pools are uncommon.

On the Lake

Lakefront Motel, on a bluff overlooking Lake Erie and Conneaut Harbor, offers budget-friendly rooms within walking distance of the marina, beach and a lakeside picnic area. Boat ramps across the road from the motel provide lake access for boaters, and the owners maintain an affiliation with a local charter captain. Located about 20 minutes from the Cedar Point amusement park, Wild Waves Motel and Beach has both motel rooms with kitchenettes and rustic cabins. A boat launch is about one quarter mile away, and the motel’s parking lot accommodates boat trailers.

Northern Ohio

Colonial Inn South, located in Milan, birthplace of Thomas Edison, has standard rooms and VIP hot-tub rooms with heart-shaped Jacuzzi tubs. Triple rooms with three queen-sized beds sleep six. An outdoor heated pool is open from June through August, and Maw’s Place, the on-site restaurant, serves a full menu daily. Located just south of Willard, the Walton Inn offers standard rooms with microwave ovens and mini-fridges. The very reasonably priced motel is within walking distance to three chain restaurants.

Central Ohio

Yellow Springs, about 20 miles east of Dayton, is the site of the Springs Motel. The smoke-free property provides guests with cards and games, and has a gazebo for picnics or reading. Guests are invited to check themselves in if the owner is away from the property when they arrive, and the entire motel can be rented for a reasonable rate. The Inn Towner Motel, just west of Wayne National Forest in Logan, is a two-story property with inexpensive standard rooms. Six restaurants are within walking distance.

Southern Ohio

Located in Hillsboro, Cedar Hill Motel offers standard rooms with microwave ovens and mini-fridges, and efficiency rooms with kitchenettes. Free Wi-Fi is a standard amenity. More than 35 dining choices are within a five-mile radius of the motel. Country Nights Inn is the only motel in West Union, and their pricing reflects their monopoly. Standard rooms have two beds, microwave, mini-fridge and a private bath. The motel is a short walk away from Walmart and fast-food restaurants.
