North Carolina Lake Resorts

by Meg Jernigan

North Carolina lake resorts are usually upscale properties offering amenities from golf to lake cruises and accommodations that include secluded cabins and luxury suites. Many charge seasonal rates and a few require minimum stays. Spa services, when available, typically come at an additional cost. Guests at lake resorts near the ocean and in the mountains benefit from proximity to additional recreation options.

The Castle B&B and Courtyard Villas

The Castle B&B, located on Silver Lake on North Carolina’s coastal Ocracoke Island, offers rooms in the bed and breakfast and vacation condos. Rooms in the huge home, decorated with antiques, have private baths. One-, two- and three-bedroom condos have large kitchens and screened porches or decks. A large swimming pool and sundeck are adjacent to a pool house with sauna and steam shower. The innkeepers recommend that parents traveling with children under 12 rent a condo, since young children are not allowed in the bed and breakfast.

Greystone Inn

Located on Lake Toxaway in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greystone Inn offers golf, tennis, boating and hiking. Complimentary champagne cruises on the classic mahogany boat, Miss Lucy, tour the lake. Buffet breakfast and gourmet dinners, included in the cost of the room, highlight local ingredients. Guests at the Greystone have dining privileges at the Lake Toxaway Country Club for lunch, or the resort will pack a box lunch. Sothys Signature Spa features European treatments, and the fitness center offers classes in Pilates, yoga and core conditioning.

Foxhunt at Sapphire Valley

Foxhunt, located on Fairfield Lake in Sapphire Valley in the higher elevations of the southern Blue Ridge, offers two-bedroom suites with full kitchens and fireplaces. The resort’s recreation center, open seven days a week, has two heated outdoor swimming pools and one heated indoor pool, miniature golf, video games, hot tubs and saunas. Tennis instruction on 10 courts, two nearby golf courses and boating on the lake round out the activities. Sapphire Valley Ski Area, 10 minutes away, has a 1,600-foot main run and tubing area.

Highland Lake Inn

Highland Inn’s 26-acre property at the edge of Flat Rock Lake is a short drive from Asheville’s regional airport. The inn offers a variety of accommodations including rooms in the lodge, cabins, vacation homes and a honeymoon suite. Boats and bicycles are free to use, and several golf courses are a short distance away. On-site professional masseuses provide individual and couples in-room massage. Season’s restaurant uses fresh herbs and produce from the inn’s gardens in buffets and at dinner service.
