Filmed in Malibu, California, the coming of age movie, "Sizzle Beach U.S.A." is about young adult love and starting new careers in a new location. It's actually an excuse for the characters to take their clothes off. When it was released in 1986, the tagline for the movie was "Hot Sand! Hot Bodies! Hot Costner!"
"Sizzle Beach U.S.A." is a comedy/drama starring a teenage Kevin Costner long before he was a celebrity. The independent film was originally given the name "Malibu Hot Summer" when it was made around 1978. It wasn't released until 1986, after Costner was famous. It presumably wasn't released earlier due to its overall poor plot and acting.
Kevin Costner plays John Logan, Terry Congie plays Janice Johnston, Leslie Brander plays Dit McCoy and Roselyn Royce plays Cheryl Reilly. The director of "Sizzle Beach U.S.A." was Richard Brander and the writer was Craig Kusaba. The actor Larry DeGraw plays Brent Richardson, James Pascucci plays Von Vitale and Peter Risch plays Pete Fargo.
Set in Malibu, "Sizzle Beach U.S.A." is about the love lives of three young women who get together and rent a beach house. Cheryl Riley frequently jogs and one day she meets an investment broker. She becomes friends with him and he gets her a job in a high school. Janice Johnston is trying to further her career as a professional guitar player. She spends her time with her cousin, Steve, played by Robert Acey, who also lives in the house with the three girls. Steve just happens to be a hunk, which adds to the predictability of the plot. The third girl, Dit McCoy, is taking horseback riding lessons from John Logan, played by Kevin Costner, who is the rich owner of a horse farm. Dit and John get along well and end up in his bedroom more than on horseback.
"Sizzle Beach U.S.A." received bad reviews. According to the website, IMDb, the movie received a score of two out of 10 possible stars. Rarely are movies given scores that low. The website Rotten Tomatoes states that the movie is very bad with horrible acting and no plot. The reviewer gives Kevin Costner a good review, stating that he is a good actor even as a young man. Although this is Kevin Costner's first movie, his acting already shows promise and is probably the only saving grace in an otherwise poorly scripted movie.
