The Plains Cree First Nations people called it “waskasoo seepee” meaning Elk River. To the newly arrived British fur traders, the free ranging elk reminded them of the European red deer. Over time Red Deer became not only the name of the river that flows through the heart of the valley but of the growing township. Visit this Alberta prairie town, halfway between Edmonton and Calgary, and fish in the river or play golf on greens nestled within its banks. Conveniently located motels are ready to welcome you.

Holiday Inn Express Red Deer

More upscale than many properties in the motel category, Holiday Inn Express caters to the weary road warrior, the traveling executive and families on vacation. The Red Deer property is on the southern edge of downtown, across from the Bower Place Shopping Centre and one block from Red Deer College. Play a round of golf at River Bend Golf & Recreation Centre and then come back and take a dip in the indoor pool. Go out for a tasty treat at Boston Pizza or the Rusty Pelican, both within blocks of the motel. An extra for winter travelers, parking spaces are equipped with engine block plug-ins for your car. These keep your engine oil from freezing and are handy during a typical Canadian prairie winter. Full breakfast is included in the room rate.

Western Budget Motel

Just off of Highway 2 and barely inside Red Deer city limits, the Western Budget Motel welcomes guests with some of the lowest rates in the area. The two-story stucco property looks like a throwback from the 1960s but offers contemporarily furnished rooms complete with fireplaces. Some rooms offer kitchens as well as jetted tubs. The parking spaces have those all important winter plug-ins. You are only a mile from the Bower Place Shopping Centre and three from the center of town.

Super 8 Red Deer

For many travelers, the familiar yellow sign with the big red “8” is a familiar sight along roadways throughout Canada and the United States. Moderately priced rooms with and without kitchenette are offered, with breakfast included in the room rate. The Super 8 Red Deer is in the northern part of town and only five miles from the River Bend Golf & Recreation Centre. Shop your heart out at Parkland Mall, try your luck at Jackpot Casino and then visit the on-site Shangri-la restaurant for a meal. If you’d rather have some Italian fare, a Boston Pizza outlet is across the street. Some rooms are designated pet-friendly. A nightly pet fee is charged.

Comfort Inn & Suites Red Deer

Offering easy access off of both Highway 2 and 11, the brick red façade of the Comfort Inn & Suites Red Deer offers travelers both kid- and pet-friendly accommodations. Check into your hotel room or one-bedroom suite and then head down to the indoor pool for a zip down the water slide. Follow Highway 11 four miles west to the Red Deer Bird Sanctuary and do a bit of bird watching. Bowers Place Shopping mile is less than two miles north. Nearby restaurants include the Mohave Bar and Grill and that Canadian icon, Tim Horton’s. Hot breakfast is included in the room rates.
