Motels in Norman, Oklahoma

by Meg Jernigan

Norman, home of the University of Oklahoma’s main campus, is just south of Oklahoma City. Chain motels clustered along Interstate 35 west of downtown provide most of the accommodations in the city. Privately owned properties in Norman and near the university campus range in class from bare bones accommodations to upscale retreats.

North of the City

The AAA three-diamond Embassy Suites is the 2009 winner of the Hilton chain’s Connie Award for overall quality and service. Located in the North Park retail and business development, the hotel participates in Embassy Suite’s free breakfast and cocktail hour program. Value Place is an extended stay motel, built in 2007, that offers three different room styles for weekly rentals. Housekeeping is not done on a daily basis, but guests may exchange their linens any day of the week.

Near the University of Oklahoma

Best Western Norman is the closest motel to the university campus, and sells out quickly during football games and other events. Rates are higher on the weekend. The Cutting Garden, a bed and breakfast on the northern side of the campus, features a flower garden with water features and mature trees. Two of the three rooms at the property have access to a hot tub and two-person Jacuzzi. A number of privately owned, basic, no-frills motels dot the eastern edge of the campus. Choose carefully as some are in dicey neighborhoods.

In Town

The Montford Inn, a cozy, secluded bed and breakfast just outside downtown Norman, has both standard rooms and cottages. A park, the Sooner Theatre, restaurants and shops are within walking distance. Canopy beds, outdoor hot tubs and two-person Jacuzzis are available in some rooms, and cottages have private baths and fireplaces. One of the rooms, decorated with artifacts from Norman’s past, has vintage photos on the walls. Hot breakfast is delivered to guests staying in cottages. Single weekday, corporate and extended stay rates are available.

Along the Interstate

Eight chain motels are located at or near the interchange of Main Street and Interstate 35. Sandwiched between the Sooner Mall and the Merkle Creek Shopping Center, Econo Lodge, Super 8, Travelodge, Guest Inn and Quality Inn offer budget-friendly accommodations. Hampton Inn and Fairfield Inn offer slightly more upscale amenities at a higher price. A Hilton Garden Inn and Courtyard by Marriott are slightly to the north along Interstate 35, and La Quinta and County Inn and Suites are to the south.
