Located in northern Delaware, only 12 miles from Wilmington and 41 miles from downtown Philadelphia, Newark is home to the University of Delaware. If you’re planning a visit to Newark and would like to find accommodations that are comfortable but reasonably priced, the city has five motels that should fit the bill. A motel in Newark makes an excellent base for exploring the broader region, including Wilmington, the Brandywine Valley and Philadelphia.

Days Inn Newark Wilmington

Just off Exit 4B of Interstate 95, the main north-south artery through the area, this two-story, 142-unit motel is within easy driving distance of the Christiana Mall and the campus of the University of Delaware. All guests rooms feature microwave ovens, compact refrigerators and high-speed Internet. Other facilities include a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, guest laundry and complimentary breakfast buffet. Restaurants nearby are Applebee’s, Bugaboo Steak House, Olive Garden, Old Country Buffet and Red Lobster.

Econo Lodge

This two-story, 103-unit motel, located near the junction of I-95 and U.S. Highway 273, lies close to several area attractions, including the Winterthur museum, library and gardens; Delaware Park racetrack; and Brandywine Zoo. High-speed Internet access is available in all guest rooms and common areas. Other hotel facilities include an exercise room, free weekday newspaper and complimentary continental breakfast. Restaurants close to the motel are Christiana Pub, Denny’s, Don Pablo’s and Houlihan’s.

Howard Johnson Inn and Suites and Conference Center

Just off Exit 1 of I-95, this two-story, 142-unit motel is roughly ½ mile from the University of Delaware campus and an easy commute to the business districts of both Wilmington and Philadelphia. All rooms and suites feature microwave ovens and compact refrigerators, as well as wireless Internet, which is also available in all of the hotel’s common areas and its business center. Recreational facilities include a seasonal outdoor swimming pool and fitness center. The motel serves a complimentary continental breakfast. Restaurants nearby are Friendly’s, Iron Hill Brewery, Matilda’s and TGI Friday’s.

Red Roof Inn Wilmington

Despite its name, this three-story, 119-unit motel is located in Newark, although it’s only a short drive to downtown Wilmington, Delaware’s largest city. If you’re traveling with a pet, this is the place for you. Your animal companion shares your room for no additional charge. Wireless Internet is available in all guest rooms, and the motel provides complimentary coffee and tea. Nearby eateries include Applebee’s, Chili’s, McDonald’s and Red Lobster.

Super 8 Newark

This two-story, 48-unit motel lies within easy walking distance of the University of Delaware campus, and is only a four-mile drive from the Christiana Mall, the region’s largest enclosed shopping center. Microwaves and compact refrigerators are available upon request. The motel treats guests to a complimentary continental breakfast each morning and a free copy of USA Today Monday through Friday. Nearby restaurants include Cucina di Napoli, Deer Park Tavern, Home Grown Cafe, Klondike Kate’s and Vita Nova.
