Motels Near Charlotte

by Meg Jernigan

Charlotte, home to the University of North Carolina, USAirway’s hub airport and the location of a speedway famous for NASCAR events, boasts more than 50,000 hotel rooms. Chain motels dominate the Charlotte market; inexpensive mom and pop operations are hard to find and are not always in the best neighborhoods.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport

Almost 20 chain motels, including Ramada, Courtyard, Wingate and Holiday Inn, are located at the two Interstate 85 entrances to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The exception is Airport Inn, an economical, no-frills choice. Three privately owned motels to the southwest of the airport offer budget-friendly accommodations. Many of the chain motels offer park and sleep programs, where guests staying one night may leave their cars parked at the motel while they’re away on a trip.

Interstates

Interstate 77 is the main north/south route through Charlotte. The intersection of 77 and Charlotte’s beltway, Interstate 485, near Northlake Mall is the location of Drury Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Fairfield Inn and Comfort Suites. Chain motels clustered around Interstate 85 near the University of North Carolina at Charlotte are higher priced than motels that are not near a major attraction. Interstate 77’s southern intersection with 485 is near the Arrowood business district and Carowinds Amusement Park. Marriott, Hyatt and Holiday Inn are nearby.

Suburbs

Affordable Corporate Suites, in Concord to the northeast of the city, is a Virginia and North Carolina chain offering extended-stay suites with full kitchens. Davidson is north of Charlotte near Lake Norman. The 18-room Davidson Village Inn, across the street from Davidson College, offers upscale accommodations in a bed and breakfast setting. Home-Towne Suites in Kannapolis is a Christian-based motel with larger suites than most extended stay properties with studio, one- and two-bedroom suites.

Attractions

The U.S. National Whitewater Center, a recreation facility with rafting, mountain biking and rock climbing facilities, is an official Olympic training center. The nearest motel is the Holiday Inn Express about six miles away in Belmont. The motel offers free shuttle service to locations in a seven-mile radius. Three motels, Hilton Garden, Fairfield Inn and Comfort Suites, are within a short drive of Historic Latta Plantation, a restored 1800 cotton plantation and living history museum.
