Motels in Delaware are concentrated on the beach and along the Interstate 95 corridor. Most chains have a motel or two in the state, generally along the interstate and in the larger cities. Beach motels, hotels and vacation homes, many of them seasonal, provide a less cookie-cutter approach to an overnight stay.
Beachgoers in Delaware have a variety of lodging options. Fenwick Island, the southernmost beach in the state, offers a handful of privately owned motels. The Addy Sea in Bethany Beach is an oceanfront adults-only Victorian bed and breakfast built in 1902. The huge home has 13 guest rooms and a veranda facing the water. Farther north, Dewey and Rehoboth beaches offer a few chain motels and many oceanfront accommodations. The Beacon Motel, located near the docks of the Cape May Ferry, is a short walk from downtown Lewes and Lewes Beach.
Chain motels in Dover are concentrated on route 13, the Dupont Highway. Holiday Inn, Comfort Suites, Red Roof and Fairfield, among others, maintain properties here. Dover Downs features live harness racing and a casino. Rooms at the AAA four-diamond hotel at the Downs have racetrack and city views, and in-room wagering facilities. A little south of Dover, the Shamrock is a classic motor court motel featuring standard rooms with Wi-Fi, mini-fridges and cable television. The motel is near Brecknock Park, site of a historic farm and mill.
Newark and Wilmington
Interstate 95 runs between Newark and Wilmington, and motels cluster around the highway’s interchange with route 1. Chain motels in the area include Days Inn, Red Roof Inn, Fairfield and Country Inn & Suites. The Hilton Wilmington Christiana entertains guests with a daily ceremony featuring a "Royal Swan Master" leading the hotel’s small flock of swans to its supper. Quality Inn, just south of the University of Delaware, offers economical rooms and a hot breakfast. The 24-hour 896 Diner is adjacent to the motel.
Off the Beaten Path
Killens Pond and Trap Pond are Delaware state parks with cabins. Killens Pond cabins are open year-round and have kitchens, air conditioning and heat, and an outdoor grill. The use of a canoe is included in the rental. Rustic cabins at Trap Pond don’t have running water and are open only from March through November. Built in 1836 and restored in 2008, The Brick Hotel on the Circle offers standard rooms and one suite. Located in Georgetown, the hotel also houses a restaurant and tavern.
