Origami is traditionally completed by folding paper into different shapes, without the use of fasteners or scissor. You can achieve many of the same shapes by folding ribbons instead of paper. However, unlike origami, you have to use scissors and hot glue to achieve the desired shapes and secure them in place. One simple shape is an origami heart, made by weaving two ribbons together.
Items you will need
- 8-by-1/4-inch pink grosgrain ribbon
- 8-by-1/4-inch white grosgrain ribbon
- Hot glue
Cut two pieces of 8-by-1/4-inch grosgrain ribbon, one pink and one white. If preferred, you can use two different colors or both ribbons in the same color.
Place the white ribbon vertically on your workspace. Place the pink ribbon on top of the white one, positioning it horizontally. Fold the white ribbon at the center, on an angle, to create a V shape, with the pink ribbon sandwiched in between.
Bring the right arm of the pink ribbon upward so it lays to the right side of the left arm of the white V.
Fold the right arm of the white ribbon to the left. Cross over the pink ribbon and behind the left arm of the white ribbon, ending parallel to left arm of the pink ribbon.
Bend the right arm of the pink ribbon over the two arms of the white ribbon. Tuck the pink ribbon behind its own left arm.
Bend the right arm of the white ribbon backwards, placing it behind its left arm. Bring the bent arm in front of the right arm of the pink ribbon, leaving it parallel to the left pink arm.
Fold the right arm of the white ribbon backwards, ending it behind all the other arms.
Bend the left arm of the pink ribbon down over the front of the entire structure. Tuck the end into the pink ribbon running horizontally across the bottom of the structure. Bend the right pink arm down over the front of the structure. Feed the end of the right pink arm under the pink ribbon running across the middle of the structure. Bend it behind the structure and tuck it into the crossing ribbons in the back.
Apply hot glue the ends of all four arms to secure them. Trim away any excess ribbon.
Cut a 1/2-inch V into the top of the structure to create the top of the heart. Pass the cut ends through an flame of a candle to heat-seal them and finish the heart.
Tips & Warnings
- Attach a pin to the back of the finished heart to wear it as a pin or slide a bobby pin through the ribbons to wear it in your hair. Alternatively, hot-glue a piece of ribbon to an alligator hair clip. Once the clip is covered, attach the heart to the top.
