How to Make Recycled Halloween Decorations

by Mary Sharp

Come Halloween, many people like to put up spooky decorations around and outside the house. But there is no need to go out and buy brand-new decorations each year. You can save money and help the planet by making Halloween decorations out of items you already have on hand.

Items you will need

  • Cardboard egg cartons
  • Scissors
  • Newspaper
  • Craft paints, black and white
  • Paintbrushes
  • Glue
  • Rice
Step 1

Using the scissors, cut two of the egg holders out of the egg carton.

Step 2

Trim the edges around the egg holders so that they are even, without any jagged edges.

Step 3

Place newspaper on a flat surface and set the two egg holders upside down on it.

Step 4

Paint the outside of the cups white.

Step 5

Allow the paint to dry for 20 minutes.

Step 6

Turn one of the cups over and fill the inside with rice. This will weigh it down so that it doesn't fall over.

Step 7

Place glue around the cut edge of the bottom cup and place the second cup upside down on top of it. The two cups will form a "ghost" when glued together. Allow the glue to dry for 15 minutes.

Step 8

Use black craft paint to draw a ghost face on the front of the egg holder. Allow it to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Line a windowsill with a row of the small ghosts, use them in a Halloween centerpiece or hot-glue a looped ribbon to the top and hang a ghost from a doorknob.
