Play dough is a great way for children to show off their creativity, but even the most patient parent realizes how messy this fun substance can be. If your children love their play dough, but you don't like the smears it leaves on your table, make an easy play dough place mat that lets your child play to his heart's content without causing a huge mess.

Items you will need

  • Card stock
  • Scissors
  • Contact paper
Step 1

Cut out a piece of card stock that is 18 inches long and 13 inches wide using a pair of sharp scissors.

Step 2

Remove the backing from a piece of contact paper, revealing the sticky side.

Step 3

Lay the contact paper flat over the card stock.

Step 4

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have covered one side of the card stock completely. Do not worry if you have overlapped the edges of the card stock. Depending on the size of the contact paper, you may need two or three pieces to cover the card stock.

Step 5

Turn the card stock over, and cover the other side with contact paper as well.

Step 6

Trim the contact paper from around the edges of the card stock, getting rid of any overlaps. The card stock is sturdy and the contact paper is waterproof, giving your play dough place mat some strength and resistance to staining.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may also laminate the card stock instead of covering it with contact paper.
