How to Make an Origami Darth Vader

by Kim Blakesley Google

Darth Vader is the villain on the Star Wars Trilogy movies. This black man/machine is a favorite among Star Wars enthusiasts. Create a paper Darth Vader using the Japanese paper folding art of origami. A single sheet 8 1/2-by 11-inch piece of paper creates a Darth Vader that is viewed flat or can be placed on the finger as a finger puppet. The paper folding process takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Make sure to draw on the surface to create the respirator and face on the Darth Vader mask.

Items you will need

  • 8 1/2- by 11-inch piece of black paper
  • Ruler
  • White colored pencil
Step 1

Place a sheet of black 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper on a flat work surface so the 11-inch edges are on a vertical axis.

Step 2

Measure across the top edge and place a very small mark at 4 1/4-inch; this is the center of the edge. Fold the top left-hand corner down, stopping at the center mark, to make a perfect triangle just like making the first fold for a paper airplane. Fold the top right-hand corner down, stopping at the center mark and make a triangle. Crease firmly along both folds.

Step 3

Match the top point to the bottom edge. Crease along the fold firmly.

Step 4

Fold the point up 1/2-inch. Leave the back piece of paper flat. Crease firmly along the fold.

Step 5

Fold the point up 1-inch. Crease firmly along the fold. Repeat the process one more time.

Step 6

Measure across the folded top edge and place a very small mark at 4 1/4-inch; this is the center of the folded edge. Fold the top left-hand corner down to form a slanted triangle, stopping approximately 1/2-inch from the center mark. Place the left hand corner approximately 3/4-inch away from the vertical center of the paper. Crease along the fold line. Repeat the process with the right-hand corner.

Step 7

Flip the paper over. Fold the bottom edge up 1-inch. Crease firmly along the fold line.

Step 8

Look at the folded paper and locate the left point on the top folded edge. Fold the outer most left-hand corner of the paper to the right to form a long narrow triangle shape. The right edge of the narrow triangle is on a vertical axis with the left point on the top folded edge. Repeat the process with the right point on the top folded edge and the outer most right-hand corner of the paper.

Step 9

Look at the bottom two points of the narrow folded triangles. Fold the flap on the inside of the left narrow triangle to the left so it is flush with the inside edge. Fold the flap on the inside of the right narrow triangle to the right so it is flush with the inside edge.

Step 10

Flip the completed paper Darth Vader over. Center and draw two eyes above the folded point section. Draw five to seven vertical lines in the center of the folded point section to complete the respirator part. Draw a small rectangle, 1/4-inch by 3/4-inch, directly under the folded point for the mouth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Open the pocket between behind the folded point and insert your finger to use the folded paper Darth Vader as a finger puppet.
