How to Make a Kids' Birthday Party on a Rainy Day

by Taylor Divico, Demand Media

No matter how dreary the day, with a smidge of creativity, a rainy day birthday party within the confines of your own home can become the kid-favorite event of the year. Indoor soirees offer a number of entertainment options for children, from quiet activities to interactive games that keep kids occupied and amused with minimal effort from the hosting parents. Turn your home into a birthday fun house by creating a space and party that cater to the interests of birthday party attendees.

    Step 1

Arrange a craft room with various art-inspired stations that feature activities such as jewelry-making, sculpting with clay, water-color painting, puppet-making and paper airplane construction. Supply materials including beads, string, rolling pins, cookie cutters, water-color paint, paintbrushes, felt google eyes, paper, crayons and coloring books.

    Step 2

Organize indoor games in a spacious area, such as your basement, implementing sports equipment. Hang a hula hoop for kids to throw a football through. Position a plastic cup sideways on the floor for golf ball-putting. Line up bowling pins or empty soda bottles and provide kids with a plastic bowling ball or tennis ball to roll toward the pins. Give kids novelty prizes such as bouncy balls, paddle balls, bubbles, water guns, glow sticks, key chains and play jewelry as prizes for playing the games.

    Step 3

Engage children in group entertainment accompanied by music. Hang a piƱata and allow children to swing at it with a baseball bat, one person at a time. Set up a pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey game. Conduct a limbo contest, using a jump rope or broomstick, play musical chairs or have a dance-off.

    Step 4

Set-up multiple board games for kids to enjoy in small groups. Examples include Battleship, Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, Pictionary and Monopoly. Allow kids to snack on finger foods such as fruit skewers, cheese and crackers, chips, chicken tenders and taquitos while playing the games.

    Step 5

Facilitate a pizza-making session, allowing kids to make personal pizzas for their meals. Provide a number of toppings for children to choose from. Bake the pizzas while the children play board games or enjoy crafts.

    Step 6

Draw the blinds in your den or family room and decorate the space with glow-in-the-dark paraphernalia, such as glow sticks and lava lamps. Dangle glow-in-the-dark stars from the ceiling. Set-up bean bags, tents and oversized pillows for children to lounge on. Feature a kid-favorite movie. Provide birthday party attendees with goodie bags and movie snacks such as popcorn and candy.
