How to Make Gumpaste Snowflakes

by Nannie Kate

Gum paste is a moldable sugar mixture that is used to fashion decorations for cakes. The gum paste dries to a hard finish. Bakers often create their gum paste decorations ahead of time and store them so that they can use them at will when decorating cakes. Gum paste is tinted to the baker's exact specifications, cut or shaped in detail and combined with other shapes for elaborate displays. Try your hand at making gum paste snowflakes for a cake with a winter theme.

Items you will need

  • Gum paste
  • Rolling pin
  • Cutters
  • Waxed paper
Step 1

Knead the gum paste with clean hands until it becomes malleable.

Step 2

Roll the gum paste to the desired thickness for your snowflakes, using a rolling pin.

Step 3

Press a gum paste snowflake cutter into the gum paste. Remove the snowflake and lay it on waxed paper to dry.

Step 4

Repeat this process to cut as many snowflakes as you need.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many of the techniques used with fondant decorations are also used with gum paste. Explore fondant decorations for additional ideas in using your gum paste, including embossers that stamp patterns into the gum paste.
  • Small cookie cutters are a good substitute when you don't have gum paste or fondant cutters.
  • Embellish your gum paste snowflakes with edible glitter, edible gold and silver or tinted pearl dust for a more sophisticated look.
  • Work with small amounts of gum paste at a time. If you attempt to use too much at one time, it may begin to dry and harden before all your pieces are cut.
