How to Make a False Mustache

by Erin Ringwald

A false mustache can add the finishing touch to a party or Halloween costume or serve as a makeup accessory for a character in a school play. Making your own requires little time and effort. You can easily create a false mustache from items found at the local craft store or from your craft supplies at home.

Items you will need

  • Flexible measuring tape
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Craft felt
  • Fabric pen
  • Fabric scissors
  • Soap
  • Towel
  • Spirit gum
Step 1

Measure the distance between the top edge of your upper lip and the bottom of your nose using a flexible measuring tape. Measure the distance from one corner of your mouth to the other. Record the measurements for reference.

Step 2

Use a fabric pen to draw the style of mustache you want on a piece of felt. Use the recorded measurements to determine the size of the mustache.

Step 3

Cut the mustache out using fabric scissors.

Step 4

Wash the area above your lip with soap and water and dry it with a towel. Apply a thin layer of spirit gum to the area. Brush a layer of spirit gum on the back of the mustache. Wait a bit to allow the gum to become tacky.

Step 5

Place the felt mustache over the spirit gum on your lip area. Press the mustache against your skin and hold it for a count of five. Dab your index finger lightly across the width of the mustache to ensure it adheres evenly.

Tips & Warnings

  • To remove the mustache, use spirit gum remover, following the manufacturer's directions.
  • Another option is to use a small cutout of fake fur to create a mustache.
