How to Make a Cobra Stitch

by Alexis Rohlin

A cobra stitch is made by weaving two different colored plastic laces together. The cobra stitch pattern is created by alternating between tying two different stitches with the plastic lace. The first stitch is made with the left lace and the second stitch is made with the right lace. The two different stitches create a top and bottom color in the weave that looks like the color pattern of a snake. Make a cobra stitch with plastic laces in your favorite colors and attach it to a key chain or zipper pull.

Items you will need

  • 2 plastic lanyard laces, first color, 4-feet
  • 2 plastic lanyard laces, second color, 4-feet
  • Scissors
Step 1

Hold the four plastic laces together and align the ends. Tie them all together in an overhand knot at one end. Spread out the laces and alternate them by color so that you have four laces going left to right.

Step 2

Pass the rightmost lace under the two center laces and over the leftmost lace. Pass the leftmost lace over the two center laces and then insert it into the loop made by the rightmost lace. Pull the leftmost and rightmost laces tight to make the first stitch.

Step 3

Pass the rightmost lace over the two center laces and under the leftmost lace. Pass the leftmost lace under the two center laces, and insert the end through the loop made by the rightmost lace. Pull the rightmost and leftmost laces tight to make the second stitch.

Step 4

Continue stitching the plastic laces by alternating between making the first stitch and the second stitch with the leftmost and rightmost laces.

Step 5

Tie off the end of the cobra stitched laces when you reach the desired length. Hold the ends together and tie in an overhand knot. Cut off the excess lace 1 inch down from the knot you just tied.
