How to Make Cheesecloth Halloween Decorations Using Sugar Water

by Alexis Rohlin

Children love dressing up for Halloween and decorating their homes for the festive, fun-filled holiday. Cheesecloth ghosts are a cute, kid friendly Halloween decoration that your children can help you make at home. Make your own ghost Halloween decorations with cheesecloth soaked in sugar water that is draped over a homemade form to dry and become a stiff, cheesecloth ghost.

Items you will need

  • Balloon
  • Plastic cup
  • Masking tape
  • White granulated sugar, 1 cup
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Black felt circles
  • Craft glue
Step 1

Inflate the balloon and tie it off. Turn a plastic cup upside down and tape the bottom (tied off end) of the balloon onto the cup. Cut a 3-foot long wire with wire cutters. Wrap the wire at its center point around the top of the cup. Bend the ends of the wire out away from the cup and raise the ends up to make the wire look like a ghost is raising its hands. Bend the ends over to make loops with them and create the hands of the ghost.

Step 2

Mix 2 cups warm water with 1 cup white granulated sugar in a bowl. Stir the mixture until the sugar has completely dissolved in the water.

Step 3

Submerge the cheesecloth into the sugar water. Let it soak for five minutes.

Step 4

Remove the cheesecloth and drape it over the ghost form, with the center of the cheesecloth resting at the top of the balloon. Place four layers of cheesecloth over the ghost form.

Step 5

Let the cheesecloth ghost sit overnight or until it is completely dry. The sugar crystals should have solidified and made a stiff ghost shape with the cheesecloth.

Step 6

Glue black felt circles on the ghost with craft glue to make its eyes.
