Charmed dolls or poppets are figural representations of human beings. Personal effects or characteristics of specific persons applied to fabric figures are what give them their charm. Some spiritual traditions use charmed dolls to affect various changes in the lives of an individual. It is believed that whatever is applied to the doll is being applied to the living person. Further, certain herbs are believed to carry the power to attract certain energy to a person or force their behavior. When added to a charmed doll, they are thought to directly affect the person represented by the doll.

Items you will need

  • Pencil
  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Fabric
  • Sewing needle
  • Thread
  • 2 Buttons
  • Cotton
  • Hair (optional)
  • Nail clippings (optional)
  • Paper (optional)
  • Herbs (optional)
Step 1

Draw a gingerbread man shape onto a sheet of cardboard paper. Draw it large enough to take up most of the paper. If there are particular areas of the doll that you want to focus your charm on draw that part larger than the rest of the body so that you can stuff it with herbs later. For instance, if you wanted to concentrate on the brain, you would draw the head larger.

Step 2

Use your scissors to cut out the gingerbread man figure.

Step 3

Choose a color of cloth to correspond with either the skin color of the person that the doll will represent or the purpose of the doll. Use pink cloth for a love charm. Buy red cloth for a sex charm. Use green cloth for a money charm. Choose blue cloth for a healing charm. Use yellow cloth for a charm for success.

Step 4

Lay the paper gingerbread man on top of your fabric. Cut the fabric in the shape of the gingerbread. Repeat this on a separate piece of fabric so that you will have two fabric gingerbread men.

Step 5

Thread your sewing needle. Lay the two fabric gingerbread men one on top of the other. Sew the men together along the edges but leave the head open. Sew buttons on one side of the head for eyes.

Step 6

Stuff cotton into the doll through the head opening to fill it out.

Step 7

Personalize your doll to make it a charm. If you used a skin-colored fabric, you may not feel the need to add anymore personal effects. This is a personal choice.

Step 8

Glue on hair and/or nails from the person that your charm doll is supposed to represent.

Step 9

Write the name of the person on a piece of paper if you do not have any of his personal effects. Insert the paper into the doll through the head opening.

Step 10

Sew up the head opening. Cut small slits into the doll where you want to fill with herbs to activate your doll. Stuff the doll and sew up the slits.

Tips & Warnings

  • Comfrey leaves may be used in a green money-attracting doll. Add cubeb berries or rose petals to attract love to a pink doll. Fill a doll with anemone or lemon balm to effect healing energy.
  • Do not make a charmed doll without permission from the person for whom it is being made otherwise you will potentially violate the person.
